I finally managed to complete and release this Oiran-style photo set for Jeanne d'Arc (Alter). From initial preparation to the actual shoot took roughly an entire month. The kimono fabric is richly woven with heavy gold embroidery patterns, featuring a deep dark base with crimson lining, while the off-the-shoulder cut reveals the collarbones and shoulder contours. To capture the decadent yet dangerous essence of an Oiran, I invested substantial effort into choreography. The wig selected was pure white and straight, texturized at the roots for airy volume; the black structural headpiece atop carried hints of mecha and armor aesthetics, which, accented with black hanging tassels, anchored the starkness of the white hair and injected a sharp, aggressive edge.

The set dressing and props on location helped tremendously. The background was arranged with assorted paper umbrellas—ranging from pure white to delicate cherry blossom motifs—alongside tatami mats, wooden lanterns, painted folding screens, and black-and-gold lacquer chests, creating exceptionally rich visual layering. The studio lighting relied on warm amber tones with stark chiaroscuro contrast, making the gilded embroidery on the garment pop with tangible depth. I rotated through three handheld props: a fox mask, a lace folding fan, and a slender long-stemmed kiseru pipe. When holding the mask, gripping the rim lightly while turning in profile guided the viewer's gaze along the arm and back contours. With the pipe, the posture demanded complete relaxation—the wrist drooping naturally, eyes keeping an effortless demeanor without forced expression, gently hooded or locking onto the lens, perfectly nailing that nonchalant air.

Because the kimono skirt features an extremely high side slit, posing across the tatami mats was quite restricted. Whether lying prone, reclining sideways, or propping myself up diagonally, each adjustment required smoothing out the hemlines to guarantee clean, sweeping leg contours. Posing barefoot compared to wearing chunky black strapped platform sandals delivered completely different vibes: bare feet felt softer and more relaxed, whereas the sandals added structure and commanding poise. I utilized crossed legs, drawn-up knees, and low-key ambient illumination to carve out a mysterious, compelling focal point. The physical process was grueling—maintaining tight holds over long takes while guarding against wardrobe malfunctions placed a heavy strain on the lower back, yet seeing the frames emerge across the camera monitor made every second worthwhile.

Interpreting this character through an Oiran lens sparked a fascinating chemical reaction. She inherently possesses a rebellious, untamed edge, while traditional Oiran garments are lavish and physically restrictive; expressing these conflicting dynamics through body language was my core creative pursuit. The gaze was decisive: golden contact lenses catching the warm illumination and elongated eyeliner lent an icy sharpness, which, paired with the gesture of raising the pipe or stroking the fan, solidified the character's commanding presence. We cycled through multiple camera framings—beyond wide full-length shots, we captured focused macros, such as fingers clasping the mask rim or the pipe poised against the lips. Throughout the adjustments, I realized that the more relaxed the posture, the more authentic the capture; forcing angles only causes stiffness. Leaning naturally against the tatami or using the wooden tea table and cabinet as balance anchors brought organic life to the compositions. This shoot represents a thrilling stylistic breakthrough for me, and I look forward to exploring even more diverse avenues of expression in the future.
