Shooting this Gymnastics uniform look for Tamamo no Mae in a white studio was originally planned as a hardcore athletic concept—striving to capture the explosive strength and vitality of a sporty girl sweating it out on the court. To align with that theme, I prepared a blue-yellow-and-white volleyball, white indoor gym shoes with red piping, fluffy fox ears at the crown, and a massive fox tail behind me. Naturally, the iconic golden Summon Ticket prop was also an essential part of the kit. Yet the minute we stepped into the white studio and flicked on the lights, the stylistic vibe took an entirely unplanned detour.
The challenge of shooting in a white seamless studio is that the illumination is exceptionally clean; without delicate control, the scene easily turns flat and deprives the subject of three-dimensional depth. We therefore spent ample effort on lighting—pairing the key light with a softbox while using side-rim backlighting to trace the fluffy textures of my hair and tail, helping the pink wig pop distinctively against the pristine white background. In terms of wardrobe, I selected this white short-sleeved tee with red trim, printed with a crimson crest shield and lettering across the chest, paired with black compressive athletic shorts below. To infuse visual layering and a dash of mature allure, I deliberately coordinated black over-the-knee Stockings. In athletic styling, black tall stockings flatter leg lines remarkably well; set against the white background and black shorts, visual focus naturally centers along those sleek contours.
At first, during the standing ball-juggling takes, I managed to sustain the upright discipline of a gym class representative—hands open, eyes locked in focus, the volleyball suspended mid-air as shutters clicked away. But as shooting progressed, the mood completely drifted off course. The photographer had originally wanted to capture the explosive burst of a front-facing volleyball spike, but the moment the ball landed in my hands, my body unconsciously unwound into full-blown lounging. For the seated takes, I naturally crossed my legs, resting the ball on my knees with fingertips brushing the leather surface. The photographer noted that this angle captured the sculpted fit of the stockings and leg contours to perfection, and from that point on, the lens never returned to serious athletics.
From there, things became wonderfully unrestrained: sprawling flat atop the white cylindrical riser, propping myself up with one hand while reaching for the ball with the other, or glancing back over my shoulder to flash a peace sign at the camera. Midway through, I even pulled out the golden Summon Ticket prop, waving it playfully in hand—which created a delightfully whimsical contrast against the Gymnastics uniform. The photographer joked while firing away that he had set out to capture a varsity athlete, only to end up documenting cheerleader downtime. I couldn't help it—with this outfit and black over-the-knee socks, virtually any casual pose made leg lines look effortlessly camera-ready. Towards the end, I even kicked off the indoor shoes entirely, wandering barefoot in black tights around the studio, which felt far more liberating than forcing rigid athletic poses.
The overall shoot was not nearly as effortless as it looked on the surface. Freezing the volleyball suspended in mid-air required repeated trials to nail the timing between toss and shutter. Although the final selects feature many relaxed seated and sprawling poses, maintaining bodily stability while ensuring garment wrinkles and hair strands appeared organic demanded substantial physical stamina. Furthermore, angling the tail took extensive calibration to display its fluffy volume without eclipsing bodily curves.
This white studio session turned out to be a wonderfully memorable experience. What was conceived as a high-energy gym class transformed into an intimate, languid white-cyclorama chronicle. Even though we strayed from the original storyboard, the resulting photos felt infinitely more vibrant and authentic. These frames preserve the genuine spirit of that day—and those candid, off-script moments were truly when we felt most relaxed.
