[Helektra Cosplay] Honkai: Star Rail, Seeking Light in the Shadows with Cerydra

Shooting this official photoset of Helektra and Cerydra had many details worth sharing, from finalizing the attire to finally bringing it to life. This set of costumes is highly sophisticated in design and layering; Helektra's black and purple color scheme, combined with semi-transparent lace and layered inner wear, demands high texture quality. On the other hand, Cerydra, cosplayed by Bohelan, primarily features iconic bright blue and black-and-white checkerboard elements. During our initial makeup check, we confirmed the visual harmony of our duo pairing—one dark and one bright, creating immense visual tension.

We changed through three different styles of studio backgrounds during this shoot. The first set was a deep blue underwater-style scene, perfectly suited for characters with an underlying dark temperament and alien sci-fi feel. The blue light reflected on the costume's tulle and leather material created a mysterious and deep atmosphere, as if drowning in the dark ocean depths. The second set was a pure white flower cluster background, paired with Roman columns and a plush carpet, where the overall lighting was very soft. Under the white high-key lighting environment, the black-purple on Helektra and the bright blue on Cerydra appeared even more pure and translucent. The two of us shot this set in a very relaxed state, presenting a lighter and cuter interactive feel. The third set served as our primary battleground for shooting large-scale props. Red velvet curtains paired with mechanical gears and ornate golden frames filled the entire image with the dramatic tension of a vintage theater. The giant time-dial staff and halberd props we held at that time were quite a test for our arm strength when gripping and posing, but the sense of scene and atmosphere in this set was also the strongest.

Due to the character settings, our temperaments needed to form a contrast in front of the lens; Helektra leaned towards introversion and a cool demeanor, while Cerydra leaned towards liveliness and agility. When posing, we paid special attention to the connection between space and props, such as the opposing tension formed by leaning on the props in Figure 3, and the echo of composition lines when standing shoulder-to-shoulder—these were the details we found highly cinematic during selection. Bohelan is a highly synchronized partner, filling in gaps for each other and adjusting costume details during the shoot, making the entire creation process extremely smooth.

This cosplay attempt for the Helektra and Cerydra combination was a breakthrough in our own understanding of the characters. Cosplay is not just about putting on clothes, but about how to fit the core of the characters through body language and expressions. Although many players' first impression of these two characters might remain stuck on certain plot memes, we hoped to showcase their unique beauty within the Honkai: Star Rail universe through this meticulously crafted cosplay costume and the interpretation of different scenes. For example, looking closely at the various straps on the clothing, the asymmetrical tailoring, and the cool-toned accessories—these were all details we cross-checked repeatedly, just to do our best to recreate that unique design language belonging to Star Rail for this Honkai: Star Rail fan creation.

After the final photosets were completed, looking at the three different styles of official photos filled us with emotion. The joy of cosplay lies in bringing characters that originally existed only on screens into reality, letting the fantasy world briefly land through an outfit, a prop, and a meticulously prepared set design. I sincerely hope that friends who love Honkai: Star Rail, or love the settings of Helektra and Cerydra, can feel our dedication from these frozen moments of light and shadow.
