The core reason for such slow retouching was getting stuck in a color grading bottleneck. The weather was exceptionally clear when shooting the raw photos, resulting in high blue saturation in both the sky and steel framing. Combined with the character's blue, white, and red palette within a massive orange industrial framework, even the slightest mishandling would make the image look cluttered and muddy. I tried all sorts of filters and color balance setups, but none achieved the desired crisp, refreshing aesthetic.
The shooting location was a hardcore heavy-duty gantry crane yard in Shanghai. The colossal mechanical textures and minimalist steel lines on site resonated perfectly with the heavy industrial, subtly apocalyptic, and sci-fi atmosphere of Neon Genesis Evangelion. The wind was intense on the day of the shoot; the fluttering strands of hair seen in the final photos were not intentionally styled, but whipped up naturally by the wind. It was precisely this natural, uninhibited dynamic that captured Asuka's proud yet fiercely energetic personality.
In fact, shooting live-action cosplay like this is quite challenging because the environmental color cast was intense; plenty of orange light diffused onto the subject in sunny weather, easily throwing off skin tones if not watched carefully. Therefore, post-processing required meticulous adjustments across highlights and shadows to balance the heaviness of Industrial style photography while preserving the subject's natural translucency. Fortunately, inspiration struck last night—after fine-tuning tone curves and color split toning, I spent the whole night rapidly finishing all the main shots.
As for the wardrobe, the jumper dress is a bright blue pleated pinafore—this specific blue is very lighting-sensitive, appearing washed out under direct sunlight yet rich with texture in the shade. The crisp white shirt, paired with the red necktie and red bow headband, represents Asuka's most iconic school uniform features. The lower body was paired with White stockings and black round-toe leather shoes; this combination formed a striking color contrast against the industrial background, creating an eye-catching clash between youthful innocence and mechanical ruggedness.
Looking back at behind-the-scenes moments from this shoot, many compositions utilized low-angle perspectives. This approach captured both the blue sky and the overarching gantry crane structures, making the silhouette appear tall and slender while giving the background lines a radiating dynamic. For full-body shots, limb extension is essential; in this set, I deliberately selected several photos without exaggerated movements—simply leaning against railings or standing on blue industrial stairways with arms crossed in sheer confidence—which maximized the character's assertive aura.
In terms of retouching techniques, I emphasized orange-and-blue complementary hues and reduced background color clutter, focusing the entire visual weight firmly on the subject. The resulting images carry a sultry summer Industrial style photography warmth that you can feel through the screen, yet the character remains clean and refreshing. This was truly an exhausting and painstaking endeavor, but the final texture of the photos makes these two months of dedication thoroughly worthwhile.
