This outfit of Waguri Kaoruko inspired me to shoot a set of atmospheric night view portraits, so over the weekend as the street lights lit up, my photographer friend and I completed this session. The purple short hair paired with a pink cable-knit cardigan and a white pleated skirt styling fits the bokeh atmosphere created by the night street string lights perfectly. The wig was trimmed in layers beforehand to make the hair on the sides and back lighter rather than looking heavy or clumsy, drooping naturally along the curve of the bangs to frame the face. For makeup, we favored a daily clear look, focusing on brightening the complexion and defining eye contours to highlight a soft expression.
In terms of outfit selection, the inner white lace high-collar shirt adds a touch of delicacy, while the outer pink knit sweater features clear cable-knit patterns; the soft and elastic material creates a comfortable, relaxed feel. The lower body's pleated skirt styling exhibits a white-to-pink gradient texture that shows distinct layering when walking, paired with short white socks and dark reddish-brown patent leather Mary Jane shoes, beautifully presenting a retro sweet girl style. Night shooting really tests the lens; we used a large aperture to capture the background, transforming streetlights and tree-hung string lights into dreamy bokeh, making the subject stand out even more.
In terms of composition for these street portraits, we tried various angles, such as sitting on a bench raising an arm to show the dynamic movement of the skirt's hem, leaning by a table with chin in hand to convey a relaxed state, or standing beside a street sign waving to enhance interactivity. These actions showcase outfit details while appearing natural and un-stiff. During the shoot, the photographer guided me to adjust my posture angle as the light shifted, ensuring even face illumination and making the catchlights in my eyes more prominent.
During post-processing color grading, we retained the night's original warm yellow tones while slightly boosting the saturation of the pink tones to better reveal the soft texture of the sweater and skirt. The wooden bench, woven tabletop, and featured street signs nearby were integrated into the background as embellishments, giving the photos a cozy, everyday lifestyle vibe. The whole set didn't intentionally pursue exaggerated styling, but rather captured that quiet and comfortable state of strolling down the street. Combining the 2D anime image with daily wear relies on garment texture and natural demeanor to convey the character's inherent gentle traits. When selecting photos, we focused on the coordination between scene and subject, trying to give each photo a unique interactive feel while keeping the overall tone fresh and natural.
