Shooting this Waguri Kaoruko cosplay on a train station platform focused heavily on accentuating the character's distinct ambiance. To recreate that lucid yet subtly detached aura from the original design, I wore a deep purple long wavy wig, taking extra care to style the curls naturally with a curling iron and pairing it with a wide black headband to secure the bangs. For makeup, the focus was squarely on the eyes: bright blue contact lenses paired with a generous sweep of reddish-pink blending on the lower eyelids created that signature anime-like teary, luminous gaze from afar, while holding up impeccably under close-up shots. The outfit is a classic deep-blue sailor suit dress with brown line accents outlining the white sailor collar, tied with a pink bow at the chest, and tapered cuffs with dark buttons. Its crisp tailoring evokes the authentic, youthful nostalgia of school days.
For props, I selected a vintage dark-brown leather briefcase. The metallic buckle details added rich tactile texture, and holding it in hand not only suited the setting but gave idle hands a natural place to rest. The lighting that day was beautifully clear and airy, and photographer @RisingAirflow provided tremendous guidance on composition and posing. Because the concept leaned into pose references from shojo manga, we reviewed quite a few manga panels prior to shooting. The platform inherently provides a storytelling backdrop full of everyday realism, ideal for capturing the character's spontaneous, vibrant emotions. For example, in the first photo, leaning sideways against the metal railing, resting my chin gently on my right hand while holding the briefcase with my left, tilting back slightly, and looking straight into the lens elongated the neck line while letting the skirt and long hair drape naturally, evoking a relaxed, languid mood while awaiting the arriving train.
The second pose possessed more dynamic energy: standing frontally holding the bag with both hands, with my right leg kicked back slightly. This is a very common motif in shojo manga, but in practice, it can easily look stiff. I engaged my core to stabilize my balance and leaned forward slightly, allowing my leg lines to extend naturally beneath black stockings, while keeping my gaze playful and clear. To freeze the moment the wind caught the skirt hem and tousled hair strands, the photographer used continuous burst mode. We repeatedly adjusted our positioning near the edge of the platform to avoid background clutter, utilizing the yellow tactile safety lines and red directional arrows on the ground as leading lines to enrich the composition.
The entire shoot was a true test of detail management. For example, wigs tend to appear frizzy and dry under strong outdoor sunlight, so I kept hair serum on hand for constant touch-ups. Dark clothing can easily lose detail or blow out highlights under direct sun, so we sought shaded spots under platform canopies, using soft diffuse light to bring out the fabric's rich texture. Truly pulling off a great photoshoot is never as simple as slipping into a costume and striking a few poses; from makeup adherence and prop weight affecting postures to observing shifting ambient light, every single step requires dedicated coordination. I deeply enjoy this process of weaving 2D character concepts into real-world settings—it breathes life and dimension into flat manga characters. The overall ambiance of this station platform shoot aligned beautifully with my interpretation of The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity: retaining the breathing room of daily life while capturing those heart-fluttering moments unique to shojo manga.
