[Miyamoto Musashi cosplay] Crimson Silhouette in Autumn Leaves and Endless Hair Retouching

The most agonizing part of retouching this photo was handling the individual hair strands. We shot with a wide aperture, and the overlapping maple leaves and blurred foreground already posed a challenge for post-production; combined with the wig's dense volume, isolating the fine hair edges strand by strand was an immense workload.

The outdoor outfit featured a primary palette of red and orange, which blended seamlessly with the carpet of fallen autumn leaves. The black lace trims on the costume, the heavy armor pauldron on the left shoulder, and the black horn headpiece required prolonged adjustments during the shoot to prevent wardrobe flaws. The shoulder armor in particular—being made of a rigid material—pressed quite painfully against my arm during posing, but I pushed through to maintain character accuracy and find the most flattering silhouette angles.

As everyone knows, eye treatment is the soul of the entire photo. I wore vibrant blue contact lenses, and because the lighting was superb during the shoot, the eyes captured numerous tiny catchlights. During retouching, I aimed to preserve the layered depth and translucency of the eyes without over-smoothing the skin, subtly tweaking the catchlight reflection angles—which ended up being the most time-consuming detail depiction across the entire piece. The contrast between the warm background and the cool blue pupils gave the image a much richer texture.

Beyond large color blocks, intricate local details also received plenty of care, such as refining the metallic sheen on the gold piping and red floral patterns. Finishing the edits on this set was utterly exhausting, yet deeply rewarding. Huge thanks to the photographer for braving the autumn breeze to find the best angles and candid moments, especially capturing that side-profile lighting that was perfect for post-processing.
