[Cheshire Cosplay] Azur Lane's Classical Chinese Garden Moon Gate: An Afternoon of Red Robe and White Tail

This time, I mainly wanted to capture Cheshire's nimble and playful spirit from Azur Lane, so I specifically chose this modified cheongsam embroidered with gold thread on a red base. The cut of the outfit fits tightly to the body, with backless details that nicely outline the line of the back. Combined with the signature large plush white tail and animal ears with red lining, it creates a striking visual contrast. Blending traditional Chinese charm with anime beast-girl elements is the most appealing part of this look.

The shooting location was a classical Chinese garden, where I primarily used the massive moon gate as a natural frame. The circular opening enclosed by blue-grey brick walls focuses the shot in the center, while the pool, green trees, and white wall with black windows outside form distinct depth layers against the dark foreground brick wall. The contrast of the red dress and white tail against the grey and green backdrop is both impactful and naturally harmonious.

That big white tail was a high-volume prop, so I spent a lot of thought making sure it didn't look out of place in the shots. Sometimes I let it drape along my arm, sometimes wrapped it around my waist, and other times deliberately used it to hide my face in a cute posture. The fur is thick and soft to the touch, but because it's so long, I had to hold it with my hands while sitting to prevent it from dragging on the ground and getting dirty.

For poses, I tried various angles to showcase the outfit. Facing away highlights the back tailoring and spine line. Sitting frontward with hands over my face brings out a shy and cheeky vibe, while shading my brows with one hand creates a cooler, sharper atmosphere. Perched on the stone window sill, with legs hanging naturally or crossed, paired with white suspender stockings and glossy black high heels, the leg lines look longer, adding just the right touch of allure to the scene.

The makeup was kept clean and natural without overly heavy eye makeup. Paired with a short grayish-blue wig and styled sideburns, it lends a refreshing feel to the overall look. When shooting leg close-ups and seated poses, I paid special attention to keeping the skirt smooth to avoid creases from the stone platform.

In terms of photography composition, combining architecture and the model meant maintaining visual balance. The circular frame offered a fantastic natural framing composition, placing the model at the center with casual asymmetry within the symmetry. Using a medium-telephoto lens compressed the perspective between foreground and background, making the garden elements in the background look like a painting. The lighting used gentle, diffused natural light without harsh direct sunlight, avoiding hard highlight patches on the face and clothes. The soft light went wonderfully with the overall classical atmosphere.

For instance, the last photo where I raised my legs really tested my core strength. I had to stabilize my center of gravity on the narrow window sill while arching my feet to show the shoes' curve, all while matching the tail's flow with the movement. It took several trial angles to find the ideal shot. Throughout the process, I communicated continuously with the photographer, tweaking shoulder directions or head angles slightly to achieve the best camera sense.

When shooting seated, a crucial detail was managing the relationship between the edge of the stone sill and the skirt. Since the surface was slightly rough, I had to adjust my weight distribution and lean forward slightly to prevent the hem from creasing due to friction. I also had to control the downward curve of the long tail so it didn't look like a tangled ball of yarn. Although controlling these subtle posture details was tedious, it profoundly affected the quality of the final images.

Placing a dynamic character trait into a static garden was a very special outdoor shoot experience. The blue bricks, grey tiles, and green trees here, together with the red and white pairing on my outfit, added a quiet, timeless feel to the color palette. Overall, maintaining the stability of the wig and headpieces under the hot sun while keeping the outfit neat through repeated sitting and pose changes was physically demanding, but seeing every frame captured inside the circular frame made the whole process deeply fulfilling and fun.
