The opportunity for shooting this set of photos was the Honkai: Star Rail 3rd Anniversary, and this year I decided to use a look of Sparkle as a commemoration. After finalizing this character, I was instantly drawn to the massive playing card elements on the costume and the rabbit headpiece. The red, black, and white color-clashing combination is highly charged with anime aesthetic tension.
To maximize the recreation of the original art's essence, the entire makeup was adjusted toward an elven yet slightly mischievous direction, from wearing the red colored contacts to the heart-shaped beauty mark dotted beneath the eye. After putting on that white wig with red highlights, although the massive hair volume made my head quite heavy, the visual effect was truly beyond words. For props, I specially brought along that long-handled weapon decorated with red, white, and black stripes at the top; it holds a substantial weight, which instead added quite a bit of realism when posing and gripping it.
For the scene setup, we specially found an idle studio filled with vintage instruments. The background featuring those beige old oscilloscopes and electronic components, plus elements carrying a touch of absurdity like a disco ball, directly established the tone of the photos. A massive amount of transparent plastic film was intentionally laid out on the ground, and this slightly cluttered environment, cooperating with the dim blue ambient light in the background, formed a perfect cool-and-warm contrast with the passionate, skipping red and white on the character.
Speaking of poses, to avoid the monotony of simple standing postures, I tried out many interpretations of sitting poses this time. For instance, the playfulness of making a pistol hand gesture, or sitting on the ground with bent knees to display a relaxed laziness, and finally crouching on the floor staring into the lens with absolute focus. The specially designed open-toe straps and black short boots, combined with the leg line display, gave the overall frame a touch of maturity and intimate atmosphere alongside the character's own agility. The golden bells hanging at the ankles would even emit a crisp sound during daily walking and striking a pose, adding quite a bit of fun to the shooting process.
On the clothing details, the coat's wide sleeves and the spade and club prints of the playing cards are highly recognizable. The black belt tied around the waist hangs a plush little bunny and red tassels; although these small ornaments were hard to secure, they truly became the crowning touch of the frame after fine-tuning.
Although a few days have passed since the shoot was completed, looking back at this final output now, that fairytale wasteland style embedded within the blue-light cinematic feel still deeply captures my heart. This was a highly enjoyable cosplay photoshoot experience; from the makeup/styling to props and scene scheduling, every single segment cooperated just right, in hopes of transmitting the character Sparkle's confidence and cynicism through the frames.
