When the movie was released domestically in 2019, I bought a ticket immediately and watched Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms in theaters. Mari Okada's narrative logic and emotional tension still make my chest tighten when I recall it today. After that, I had countless impulses to cosplay this character, but whether out of high standards for costume quality or careful consideration of shooting locations, it kept getting shelved for various practical reasons. Unbelievably, after turning around in circles for six full years, this dream was finally realized during this transition between spring and summer.

To recreate the pure, otherworldly, and detached ethereal feel of Maquia, a huge amount of effort went into the costume and wig for this Maquia cosplay. The fabric of the white dress was chosen for its airy, elegant drape, paired with a subtle loop of gold metal accessories dangling at the waist and light blue accents at the cuffs—avoiding overly flashy embellishments in favor of an airy feeling akin to morning mist. The hardest part was actually this ultra-long blonde wig; it not only required balanced weight distribution to fall naturally, but also needed a fluffy, flowing movement when caught in the wind. It was indeed very windy on shooting day; while it added plenty of dynamic spirit to the look, managing and grooming it was a true test of patience.

The outdoor locations chosen for this shoot fit the character's temperament remarkably well. The first stop was a rolling green grassy slope; I particularly love the low-angle perspective in photo 1. Although the morning was overcast with thick, low-hanging clouds and virtually no direct sunlight, this diffuse lighting environment countered harsh top-light shadows, making facial contours appear exceptionally soft. We then relocated to an expansive Sea of flowers photoshoot location filled with purple verbena and pink blossoms. For environmental Portrait photography in the flower fields, the photographer kept the camera position extremely low, using blurred foreground blooms to construct depth while placing me in the mid-ground, seamlessly blending the stretching floral fields with the subject. The most cinematic setting was a white hollowed brick wall, where weathered brick openings paired with pink flower slopes behind created a serene, everyday feel. Sitting atop it with a fleeting glance naturally released a narrative ambiance.

Of course, due to the lack of sunlight, the RAW files shot that day felt somewhat flat and grey with weaker visual tension. I spent a considerable amount of time adjusting this during post-production. The overall tone was pushed toward a bright, high-key direction, enhancing highlight luminosity and carefully reconstructing cloud outlines and rim lighting. Simultaneously, I reduced plant color saturation to align pinks, purples, and blues closer to a Morandi palette, creating a fresh yet cool pastel ice-cream atmosphere. The heavy post-processing edits ultimately brought out this effect of light shimmering through thin clouds in a gentle breeze.

From early preparation to actual shooting and meticulous post-processing, though exhausting, seeing the final Cosplay photoshoot output evoked truly complex emotions within me. The movie's heavy themes of time, growth, and farewells contrast subtly with the light, dreamy, seemingly endless sea of flowers in these photos. Looping the movie's theme song at home over the past few days, the moment the intro played and I looked at my wind-blown hair and dress in the final pictures, I felt as if I had crossed time itself back to that moment wiping away tears in the cinema years ago. Being able to commemorate this deeply influential story six years later in such a concrete, tangible way is truly a precious gift to me.
