[Seiga Kaku cosplay] Ethereal Moments in Touhou Project

When shooting this look based on Seiga Kaku from Touhou Project, I specifically selected two distinctly different locations: a forest and a tranquil courtyard, which formed two unique real-world settings. The first picture was taken along a wild mountain path, where sunlight filtered through dense tree canopies leaving dappled light and shadows; the fragmented nature of natural light perfectly suited the mysterious aura of the "suspicious hermit's" appearance. The second was an antique alleyway courtyard, where bluestone pavement and wooden porches paired with soft light halos created a cinematic hazy texture through a wide aperture blurring the background in this Outdoor portrait session.

A lot of effort was put into selecting materials for this costume. The main color palette of the dress is an elegant mint green paired with pure white, with ruffled collar and cuffs adding rich layering, while the most special feature is the two accompanying long white veils. As I stretched my arms out in the courtyard, the light veil dress fluttered in the wind; combined with the high-waisted cut, it elongated my silhouette, looking floating yet playful in this Ethereal outfit. The fabric was not only visually refreshing, but also felt incredibly light and breathable, making standing and spinning outdoors for long periods much easier.

Regarding hair styling, the wig utilized a vivid blue color paired with a double-bun hairstyle, showing very rich color under the light. To keep these two buns round and fluffy, I spent considerable effort on styling, using a combination of hair wax and hairspray to ensure the look wouldn't get messied by outdoor breezes. The wing-like small ornaments on both sides of the head, together with the twin tails, added visual weight to the head while echoing the character's unique temperament nicely.

For the shoes and socks, I chose clean white mid-calf socks paired with dark round-toe leather shoes. This classic combination not only visually lightened the potential heaviness of the long skirt, but also infused the overall look with a neat everyday vibe, softening the distant feeling of a pure "fairy goddess". Notably, these leather shoes had excellent anti-slip soles, giving me a great sense of stability when walking on gravel paths or mossy bluestone roads.

Speaking of lighting techniques, I believe the most shareable aspect of this shoot lies in controlling ambient light. In the forest, I made full use of overhead light filtering through tree leaves to emphasize the translucency of the white thin gauze, giving the image rich natural layers. In the second courtyard photo, we intentionally added a soft-focus filter in front of the lens and utilized circular bokeh spots from background specular highlights to create a dreamlike effect, as if the character emitted her own light. This in-camera lighting arrangement paired with minor post-processing desaturation gave the flat photos a unique breathing quality in Cosplay photography.

As a cosplayer who frequently participates in costume crafting and character recreation, when interpreting characters from different works, I always hope to get closer to their personalities through environments and subtle gestures. Even when portraying a distant setting like a "hermit", one can enhance interactive warmth by observing falling leaves nearby or capturing that fleeting expression when turning their head toward the camera. Placing the character in real intersecting indoor and outdoor environments softened the rigidness of studio shoots, making the feeling of a "hermit descending to the mortal world" feel far more authentic.

The long veil material of the costume was perfect for displaying soft dynamic movement. While walking, I gently flicked the fabric on both sides with my hands, letting the fluttering veils bring dynamic negative space to the frame. In post-processing, I deliberately preserved the environment's native colors without over-contrasting, aiming to present a natural, translucent, and softly dreamlike feel that fits the slightly cynical charm of this "suspicious woman" character concept.

From set arrangement to movement directing, this shooting process was both a tribute to the character and an experiment in my own expression. Under different light and shadows, the same outfit presented completely different possibilities. Whether it was the mystery among the mountain woods or the elegance within the courtyard, it filled these photos with a narrative sense, which is precisely the visual experience I wished to convey beyond simple outer appearance recreation through this set of Seiga Kaku cosplay works from Touhou Project.
