For this Arknights Yi cosplay shoot, I set the core tone as aloof and alluring right from the pre-production stage. To capture such a cool, haughty, yet understated character, the key lies in restrained eye contact and subtle expressions. To match the pointed ears and the grey-to-blue gradient wig, I deliberately refined the base makeup to keep it clean and sharp.
In terms of styling, this modified Japanese-style outfit in white and blue looks very crisp, with the circular patterns on the shoulders and the black obi creating a refined visual silhouette. As for the props, the long blade featuring blue wave patterns is meticulously crafted; the handle wrapping and gold accents are solid, providing a comfortable balance when held. When striking a pose holding the sword diagonally, the cold, aloof demeanor must be carried through completely. In another set of shots holding a cyan water-ripple teacup, the fine red cord tied to the cup serves as the perfect finishing touch, adding a subtle yet eye-catching warm contrast to the overall cool color palette.
The on-site set design was exquisitely detailed: classic Japanese shoji doors combined with lush pink cherry blossom branches, paired with the paper lantern in the lower right emitting a faint, warm glow, created an intertwined atmosphere of cool and warm light. I especially love the composition of the second photo, which uses a wide-aperture blur of the foreground cherry blossoms. The large bokeh spots of pink petals guide the viewer's gaze toward the partially obscured face and the hand holding the cup. It feels like a candid snapshot captured right through the blossoms, lending an unforced sense of authenticity. Meanwhile, in the sword-holding pose of the first shot, slightly tucking the chin while looking directly into the camera with an aloof expression perfectly establishes the character's quiet yet sharp edge.
Rather than piling on flashy visual effects, this set of photos focuses on recreating the character's atmospheric presence. Relying not on exaggerated expressions, but on light, shadow, and prop details to shape the image, one only needs to maintain a relatively relaxed demeanor during the shoot. This entire process gave me a deeper appreciation for emotional expression in cosplay photography, and the resulting photos turned out quite satisfying.
