When shooting this Sakura Matou cosplay, I deliberately chose this primitive wooded area with wooden steps. Fallen leaves blanketed the stairs, and the railings were covered in moss—a slightly desolate and secluded environment that accentuated the character's repression and loneliness.
For the styling, the long purple hair was custom-made; I trimmed the curve of the bangs myself and pinned a white flower on the right side to soften the cool tone of the purple wig. The outfit consisted of a high-neck lace sleeveless white top paired with a translucent beige pleated maxi skirt. The black waist ribbon served as both an accent and a cincher. The skirt was very long, requiring careful, measured steps on the wooden stairs to avoid tripping. Red shoes were hidden beneath the hem, offering a subtle pop of color within the composition.
The temperature was high on the day of the shoot, with many mosquitoes in the woods. To keep the frames clean, we sprayed repellent in advance and touched up my makeup multiple times. During the shoot, we mainly relied on natural light filtering through the overhead canopy; the dappled tree shadows falling across me fit this melancholic photography theme perfectly. When posing for the backward glance, I paid special attention to my neck and shoulder lines, straightening my back to define the jawline while keeping my gaze softly unfocused, tinged with a glassy melancholy.
I love that line from the story expressing the insecurity of fearing one might turn into a bad person. This core psychological trait required my expression to be gentle yet laced with vulnerability and hesitation. I intentionally went for reddish eye makeup, blending it to resemble the aftermath of crying. In post-processing, rather than applying heavy filters, we slightly darkened the shadows, gave the shadows a cooler tint, and preserved the clean translucency of the skin and white garments to enhance the cool, brooding visual tone.
The essence of cosplay lies not only in recreating 2D appearances but in using 3D body language and facial expressions to interpret the character. For this forest location shoot, a lot of effort went into everything from costume prep to makeup adjustments, positioning, and mood control. I truly love how natural, authentic settings elevate the character and add narrative depth. Carrying the heavy skirt through the foliage in the heat was exhausting, but staying focused made it deeply rewarding. The staff continuously adjusted the reflector angles to keep the light luminous, and being encircled by dense greenery resonated with the character's sense of entrapment. Overall, it was a rich and memorable photoshoot experience.
