For this summer outing look of Kuonji Alice from Fate/Grand Order, I chose Uji Park for the outdoor shoot. Regarding the outfit, I picked a sheer white lace dress featuring a purple ribbon tied around the waist and matching ribbons accenting the skirt, paired with light-toned flat sandals and a woven white straw hat. The overall color palette was intended to evoke a clean, cool, and slightly enigmatic feeling. The wig was trimmed to shoulder length with neat straight bangs, instantly bringing out the character's signature demeanor.
The weather on the day of the shoot wasn't sunny; overcast skies provided very soft, diffused lighting. For outdoor photography, this kind of weather is actually an advantage—it avoids harsh facial shadows, and the white dress developed a natural, gentle sheen under the ambient light. To enhance the storytelling atmosphere, I prepared several props in advance. The plush blue bird was essential: whether cupped in my palm, resting on my shoulder, or tucked into my hat, it added a touch of lively charm to the scene. I also brought a clear umbrella to create a Transparent umbrella photoshoot moment in the post-rain garden. With water droplets clinging to the canopy, close-ups shot through the umbrella instantly gained rich depth and texture.
Throughout the session, I avoided overly complicated poses. Since Kuonji Alice has a serene, reserved demeanor, most shots featured quiet sitting or distant gazes. For instance, sitting on a stone platform with one hand steadying the straw hat and the other cradling the little blue bird while looking off-angle: with just a slight tilt of the camera, the stone clock tower and lush trees in the background framed the shot beautifully. The red-railed bridge served as the backdrop for full-body shots; strolling across the bridge in the semi-sheer dress as the breeze lightly stirred the hem allowed the leg lines beneath the lace to subtly emerge. The photographer intentionally left wide swathes of sky and distant hills in the composition, giving the frames an airy, open feel.
Mastering light and shadow was equally critical. One series utilized reflections on a glass window pane—creating a symmetrical composition where two versions of myself appeared in a single frame, one with eyes closed in contemplation and the other gazing quietly. This mirrored visual tension was striking. Furthermore, to emphasize the misty rain atmosphere, I lightly sprinkled water across the clear umbrella's surface; shooting close to the canopy with the subject in focus allowed the droplets to create a gorgeous blurred foreground, keeping the focus sharp on facial expressions.
The sheer tulle fabric of the dress posed certain shooting challenges. To ensure the translucent material didn't appear flat on camera, I asked the photographer to look for darker backgrounds—such as verdant shrubbery or lush trees—using color contrast to make the lightness of the tulle pop. The lace embroidery and purple bows on the skirt also showed wonderful detail in close-up shots. To complement this attire, the makeup emphasized the eyes with red contact lenses for a striking visual anchor, while keeping the base makeup lightweight and dewy to preserve natural skin texture.
During a break at an outdoor café table, we casually snapped a few slice-of-life behind-the-scenes shots sipping water and enjoying matcha desserts. With the straw hat and blue bird resting on the wooden table, the green beverage in the glass harmonious with the surrounding palette, it created a wonderfully relaxed Witch's Summer vibe.
Every outdoor shoot takes considerable thought. From choosing the outfit and selecting the location to planning props and adjusting the shooting pace according to the weather, every single aspect must be balanced. Overcast or rainy days are nothing to worry about; sometimes, the subdued tones after the rain align even better with cool, aloof characters. The finished outfit turned out wonderfully—from the layered lace edges to the drape of the tulle, it made every bit of preparation worthwhile. Wrapping up this shoot smoothly and coming away with these satisfying frames has made me truly happy.
