The weather was gorgeous the day we shot this JK uniform set back that summer—blazing sunshine and lush green grass freshly soaked from watering. The creative intent was straightforward: capturing a clean, youthful everyday Japanese style portrait brimming with summer nostalgia. The wardrobe centered on a classic white sailor suit top with a blue collar, matched with a dark navy pleated skirt. To avoid looking too plain, I topped it with a matching navy beret and styled my hair into twin braids draping past the shoulders. White stockings and brown leather loafers are a quintessential combination in JK uniform fashion. Because the pleated skirt is cut short, the tension and length of the over-the-knee stockings were carefully calibrated—settling right just below mid-thigh delivers the most flattering leg-lengthening effect.
Slinging on that black backpack and holding a simple white paper pinwheel immediately conjured the imagery of wandering the athletic grounds or open outskirts after school.
Our photography gear consisted of the Sony A7R3 paired with the Tamron 28-75mm F/2.8 lens—an evergreen setup for daily street snaps and outdoor portraiture. The 28-75mm zoom range offered remarkable versatility on set: shooting near the wire mesh fence at the 28mm wide end incorporated environmental leading lines to enhance visual extension; once out on the lawn, switching to the 75mm telephoto end wide open at F/2.8 compressed the background cleanly, rendering the massive white cylindrical structure into creamy, soft bokeh that isolated the subject without background clutter.
Summer midday sun is harsh, so to prevent unflattering cast shadows on the face, we actively dodged peak vertical sunlight. The even, gentle lighting seen in the frames relied heavily on the natural shade cast by nearby architecture and tree canopies. Because of my fair skin tone, shooting under open sun risks blowing out highlights easily, so exposure compensation was dialed down slightly in camera.
Posing rarely needs to be stiff or contrived—relying on handy props dissolves on-camera awkwardness effortlessly. Holding the pinwheel into the breeze, clutching the backpack straps, or leaning gently against the green wire fence pretending to wait or daydream works wonders. Sitting on the grass with knees loosely bent or resting your chin in both hands looking straight into the lens consistently catches vivid, candid moments. The massive white cylinder in the background created a striking visual clash against the verdant lawn and navy skirt, with the cool ambient environment making the subject pop with refreshing vitality.
In post-production color grading, I nudged the white balance toward cooler cyan undertones and softened the overall contrast, allowing high-key highlights to bloom slightly to evoke that airy, breezy Japanese style portrait look. The palette was harmonized across whites, blues, and greens—visually soothing and timeless rather than aggressively saturated. Shooting outdoors in the summer heat is undeniably exhausting, but freezing such clean, refreshing moments made this photography sharing session deeply rewarding.
