The event photos of Kanade Tachibana from the Chengdu World Line Anime Convention are finally organized! Preparing this outfit took roughly half a month. The jacket was custom-tailored in a muted beige, with the collar, cuffs, and pocket trims meticulously matched against deep violet panels. The gold-trimmed red-heart bow tie at the neck serves as the visual centerpiece of the ensemble; to keep it crisp and structured, multiple layers of stiff interfacing were padded inside. The wig chosen was a greyish-white long straight style with blunt bangs; since the original character design features textured, fine strands, I worked with styling wax and hairspray for quite a while to recreate that natural, feathered hair flow as faithfully as possible.
The most punishing element of this cosplay was undeniably the pair of massive white wings strapped to my back. Built from EVA foam layered with applied feather patches, they offered immense visual fullness but carried significant weight, with the harness pressure points leaving my shoulders aching. Navigating the convention hall was a test of constant awareness—given the broad wingspan, I had to keep mindful watch in every direction to avoid brushing against passersby or knocking booth displays. Later, to refine the visual presentation, I donned white over-the-knee socks and glossy black platform loafers. White stockings are notoriously prone to slipping down, so I lined the cuffs with anti-slip silicone tape, which kept them securely in place throughout the shoot.
Makeup focus for the day rested primarily on the eyes and blush. Kanade Tachibana possesses crimson eyes, so I picked vibrant, pigmented red contact lenses. The foundation was kept porcelain pale, complemented by an expansive wash of soft pink blush to highlight the character's ethereal, slightly frail, and detached temperament. During nighttime outdoor shooting, the moment the studio strobes fired, the red lenses pierced through the darkness with mesmerizing intensity; while my expression appeared serene and cool on camera, strong gusts of wind on location actually had me shivering continuously.
The Chengdu Anime Convention drew massive crowds. Indoors during the day, the outfit felt stuffy even with air conditioning running. By nighttime for location shooting, daylight faded, and the photographer set up two lights. We scouted an open patch outside the venue, utilizing the pitch-black night sky as a clean backdrop, yielding a high-contrast aesthetic that genuinely blew me away. Posing seated on the ground or across steps flattered the skirt draping and leg silhouettes remarkably, so I selected several seated captures for the final gallery to give the composition a unique edge.
Embodying Kanade Tachibana meant striving to stay composed, quiet, yet intensely focused in gaze. Although years have passed since Angel Beats! first debuted, reviving this enduring classic at a convention brought profound personal satisfaction. By wrap time, my body felt completely spent—especially my shoulders bearing the heavy wings and my feet after a full day in platform shoes. Yet seeing the luminous lighting textures, the harmony between the White stockings and the uniform, made the half-month prep and day-long exhaustion thoroughly worthwhile. I look forward to meeting everyone at upcoming conventions with even more refined work.
