Setting up the scene for this shoot took plenty of thought, with the core intent being to present a striking, high-contrast night ambiance for this Night portrait. The centerpiece is this white Modern Cheongsam: the neckline retains traditional Chinese frog button clasps, yet features a cropped cut and sleeveless tailoring paired with lace flutter sleeves and white over-the-knee socks (White stockings), bringing a touch of 2D liveliness and playfulness beyond classical elegance. To keep pure white from looking plain, ink-wash styled black floral patterns were printed across the cheongsam with fine black line work, creating rich visual depth.
For props, I chose a white plush feather fan. In the first and third photos, I held the fan halfway beside my face with my right leg crossed over my left; this seated posture wonderfully elongates the leg lines while showcasing the snug fit and fabric texture of the White stockings. For lighting, the key light shone diagonally from above, illuminating my face and legs just right to make the skin look luminous and translucent, while casting soft shadows across the wooden chair and background.
The set was styled as a traditional ancient pavilion, featuring a wooden arched canopy draped in lush white floral branches, with a colossal luminous moon lamp serving as the focal point behind me. Resonating with the theme of quiet nights and lush blossoms, the set was adorned with blue-and-white porcelain vases, white peonies, crane figurines, and miniature rockeries. The floor was strewn with white petals, which, combined with post-production starscapes, drifting snow, and glowing particle effects, crafted a cool and dreamlike visual aesthetic for this Atmospheric photography.
Refining the poses took considerable time. In the second photo, I opted for a side-profile seated posture with legs extending toward the front left, holding the fan gently against my chest with a softer gaze. This composition highlights the garment's side profile and the twin-tail hair accessories at the back. The hair ornaments also utilized white ribbons and tassels, forming a flawless color harmony with the dress and fan. During the shoot, light hitting the White stockings was prone to overexposure, so we adjusted light positions repeatedly to preserve texture and detail.
Post-processing focused mainly on layering environmental effects and unifying skin tones. Studio shoots inherently lack the natural romance of swirling snow, making post-production necessary to bridge the gap. I have always cherished this complete creative journey—from selecting wardrobe pieces to building sets, down to polishing every gesture. Materializing 2D designs into reality while integrating traditional Chinese aesthetic elements allows us to explore even more visual possibilities in Ancient style cosplay. Resting amidst blossoming flowers beneath the tranquil moonlight with fan in hand was a deeply immersive and memorable shoot.
