[Hatsune Miku Cosplay] Knight Armor and Greatsword, Strolling Through the Convention Venue

Putting on this knight armor and shouldering a greatsword and shield taller than myself instantly got me into the proper character mindset. From drawing the initial design drafts, this fan-art redesign made me determined to bring the artwork's texture fully into reality. Because this costume contains rich elements, it was crucial to preserve Hatsune Miku's iconic teal twintails and floral crown while perfectly rendering the weighty presence of a heavy knight.

For the core parts of the armor, I used relatively lightweight EVA foam sheets. To ensure a realistic silver-gray metallic sheen on the surface, sanding alone took considerable time: I first applied two base coats, hand-painted a custom metallic silver, and finally added subtle shadow weathering around the edges to give it more depth under sunlight reflections. The spiral filigree patterns on the helmet and cuirass were completely hand-carved by me, leaving my hands covered in acrylic paint for days. The blade of the greatsword incorporated transparent acrylic sheets coated with a blue gradient paint—while the crafting technique wasn't overly complex, the blue light shining through under outdoor lighting captured just the right vibe.

But the truly exhausting piece was the shield. Its surface area covered almost half my body, and it required sufficient thickness so it wouldn't sag. To keep such an exaggerated design upright, I built a sturdy internal skeleton out of PVC pipes. When finished, I was quite satisfied with how accurately the acanthus leaf patterns on the shield and the guard styling were recreated. Although individual pieces weren't exceptionally heavy on their own, once the cuirass, pauldrons, vambraces, tassets, and armored high-heeled boots were all put on, a very real sense of weight settled onto my shoulders instantly.

Because this gear was so bulky, my mobility was severely restricted, requiring a companion to help hold up the shield right from entering the convention venue. Trying to sit down and rest was a huge ordeal every time because the metal hardware buckles and rigid materials were extremely stiff, making bending over or squatting difficult. However, standing among the crowd, fellow fans passing by would show amazed expressions at this setup; that feeling of being noticed dispelled most of my fatigue. Of course, there were minor hiccups on site, such as the shield inevitably bumping into passersby, so I had to call out in advance each time to avoid blocking or hitting others.

The luckiest part of this event was also the weather and lighting. The first of the convention photos was taken in the afternoon—cloudy skies and flat light ended up highlighting the matte metallic coolness of the silver knight armor. My personal favorites are the two backlit shots where the setting sun hit right in front of the camera lens, creating broad warm-yellow halos and lens flares. This atmospheric feel suited the delicate, poetic mood of a knight on a campaign, adding a dreamy layer to the image. For Cosplay photography, the photographer kept circling around me to capture these angles, guiding my sword-lifting angle and eye expression. My gaze was supposed to look a bit fiercer, but due to lack of rest over those few days, my expression turned out a bit cool and aloof instead.

When taking it off, my undergarments were completely soaked in sweat, with red marks left on my calves and wrists from the buckles. Shooting heavy fan-art cosplay like this always feels like a dual physical and mental ordeal, but seeing these final photos and the smiles during photo ops at the convention makes all the late nights and calluses on my hands feel completely worth it. This knight armor is not only a tribute to a character image, but also my own interpretation of fan creation—using the most hardcore crafting to express heartfelt passion for the design.
