Today in the studio shooting Formidable's classic black sailor suit styling, in order to restore the texture and details of the original artwork as much as possible, the preparation stage really took a lot of thought. Starting with the wig, Formidable's iconic light-golden twin tails look very recognizable, but to style that natural, fluffy yet non-frizzy effect, you first need to use a hair straightener to smooth out the curve of the hair ends, and the black lace hair accessories on both sides also need repeated position adjustments during fixing to ensure that shooting from all angles won't reveal anything or block the facial contour.
In terms of makeup, the red contact lenses are the soul of the entire eye makeup. To match this tone, both the eyeshadow and lip color were chosen to be light and soft color families to avoid an overly heavy overall makeup look, focusing on distinct eyelashes and eye shape shaping, making the gaze look both anime-like and cool, while being able to hold up to close-up shots. The black long-sleeved cropped sailor suit top has a waist-cinching treatment in its cut, and the large red bow on the chest plays a great embellishment role visually. Because the top is a cropped midriff-baring design, to keep the abdominal lines firm during shooting, I controlled my diet in advance and did some core training. The black pleated skirt on the lower body is prone to wrinkles when walking and posing, and one needs to pay attention to the drape of the skirt hem at all times.
The pairing of white over-the-knee long socks and black platform Mary Jane shoes visually lengthens the leg proportions very well, and the platform design of the shoes also makes me slightly save effort during long hours of standing shooting. During the studio shoot, the action of standing and lifting the skirt hem looks simple, but to make the skirt hem present a perfect arc and fold layers, I tried it repeatedly several times, ensuring that the arm posture is relaxed without appearing too stiff. The photographer suggested that I put my center of gravity on one leg and slightly push my hip out, which can make the overall body shape curve look better. Another set of shots sitting on school desk chairs wanted to express that sense of contrast under a campus background. Sitting sideways on the chair with legs crossed can both maximize the visual effect of white stockings and show a slightly lazy daily state. Resting hands on the yellow desk surface and turning the head to look at the camera, that moment truly has the feeling of breaking out of the dimensional wall.
During the shooting process, light has a huge impact on the clothing material. Black sailor suits easily lose details under strong light, so the lighting in the studio needs to be relatively soft to preserve the fabric texture of the clothes. At the same time, to highlight the character's contour, the rim lighting was done very elaborately. Throughout the entire shoot, although the body was somewhat exhausted, seeing the effect of the final photos in the camera made me feel that the early preparations and on-site attempts were not in vain. The charm of anime-style photography lies in transforming flat character designs into three-dimensional visual presentations, which requires the coordination of costumes, makeup and styling, photography, and the model herself.
Finally, regarding the wearing experience of this outfit, I want to say that although this design of a cropped top paired with a pleated skirt is very good-looking, it indeed has certain requirements for one's figure. To present an ideal state in front of the lens, usual posture management is still very necessary. At the same time, a pair of suitable white stockings played an irreplaceable role in enhancing the completion degree of the overall styling. Every time I portray such characters that pay attention to lines and details, it allows me to accumulate new experience in makeup/styling and action design. I hope everyone can also feel the fun brought by this kind of cosplay.
