Teaming up with my partner to cosplay Ram and Rem from Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- made for an incredibly fulfilling Duo cosplay experience. We did extensive prep work on hair and makeup for this shoot. Trimming the wigs took quite some time—the pink and blue bob cuts needed natural curving silhouettes, and we also had to firmly secure the pearl headdresses and X-shaped hair clips. We also differentiated our contact lens colors, choosing deep red for one and bright blue for the other so the catchlights in our eyes would be much sharper on camera. The Maid outfit has plenty of intricate elements: the black base dress paired with a white ruffled apron, lace trimmings on the detached sleeves, and the black bow at the collar all required meticulous arrangement. For the lower half, we styled white pantyhose with black Mary Jane shoes; to ensure smooth, flattering leg contours on camera, we adjusted the fit of the hosiery beforehand to avoid unsightly pinch marks.
The shoot was held at Mystery Wonderland Studio, where a soft lilac-pink backdrop paper combined with a white plush rug on the floor set a gentle visual tone for the entire scene. While seemingly minimalist, this backdrop demands precise lighting; even a slight color cast could compromise the black-and-white contrast of the outfits. Our photographer, DEMON, continually adjusted our positioning to ensure the light grazed the pleated folds of our skirts perfectly. The greatest challenge of a Duo cosplay lies in synchronization—initially, our poses were a bit stiff. For poses sitting side by side on the floor, one person leaned slightly forward while the other shifted weight backward with legs extending outward, giving the composition tension and dynamic balance. Gradually finding our rhythm, we explored interactive poses such as lying on our stomachs, leaning against one another, laying head-to-head in reverse directions, and holding hands. Whenever adjusting our poses, the skirts and ruffles easily got creased or flattened, so we constantly reminded each other to straighten our clothes. Especially when lying down, we adjusted head angles several times to keep the wigs looking voluminous and fluffy.
Shooting a Duo cosplay is far more than two people simply standing together for pictures; it is fundamentally an exchange of emotion and physical connection. Even though the garments are relatively heavy and the studio lights make things hot over time, fully immersing ourselves into character made all discomfort fade away. Through shared glances and subtle touch, we captured that genuine bond between the two characters. Once the finished photos came out, the plush texture of the rug accentuated the White stockings beautifully, while the pale lilac background made the black-and-white maid uniforms appear even crisper and cleaner. The entire process was not just a faithful reproduction of the characters' appearances, but also a wonderful test of our mutual chemistry.
