Coming to Hongchiba in Chongqing to shoot Elaina from Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina proved to be somewhat more intricate in preparation than anticipated. To recreate that weightless yet enigmatic air of an Ashen Witch, selecting the garment textiles alone took considerable time. The purple cloak seen in the photos was specifically tailored from a fabric with elegant drape, lined with a subtly lustrous red facing that creates organic ripple folds during runs or leaps. The witch hat features a broad brim; to prevent it from flipping in mountain gusts, shaping wires were sewn into the brim, and its tilt was finely calibrated so it wouldn't cast an overbearing shadow before the lens.
The inner white collared shirt and yellow ribbon tie are signature hallmarks of Elaina, with the styling of White stockings serving as another visual focal point for this set. Wearing White stockings paired with dark footwear accented in soft pink, the contour of my legs registered with fluid grace on camera—fitting the low-angle upward perspective of our composition exceptionally well. I customized the prop broom by wrapping pastel purple-pink fabric and ribbons around the head to echo the overall color story. The brown crossbody satchel was carried naturally as a prop, not only enhancing traveler authenticity, but also serving as a tangible focal anchor to balance bodily momentum during dynamic takes and prevent postures from appearing stiff.
The first low-angle upward shot utilized a rock embedded in the meadow as a launch pad. Wide-angle glass induces subtle perspective distortion when capturing this brand of magical levitation. To make the tucked-leg posture look graceful, I had to point my toes firmly, tightly gripping the broom handle while torquing the wrist to lean the torso. At the peak of the leap, facial micro-management was by far the hardest part: eliminating any strained grimace of physical exertion to project an everyday ease and composed aloofness. Instead of looking directly into the lens, my gaze wandered toward the far horizon to honor her identity as a solitary traveler. The weather in Chongqing was magnificent that day; the bold contrast between azure sky and violet blooms was striking, and post-production preserved these vivid, punchy primary tones.
The second close-up portrait within the blooms was achieved while half-kneeling among the petals. A wide aperture softened the backdrop, focusing attention on the face and bodice. To yield this effortless leaning posture, one hand firmly supported the broom while the other lightly brushed the hat brim, maintaining a gentle yet penetrating gaze. Purple contact lenses and pink-toned eye blending were specifically tailored to harmonize with the attire's palette. With the sun blazing brightly, keeping my face oriented toward the key light while filling shadow contours from below with a bounce reflector gave the skin a beautifully translucent texture.
As an outdoor shoot, the natural setting of Chongqing's Hongchiba provided a peerless canvas. The sea of flowers, green meadows, and blue sky carried an inherent fantasy charm without requiring artificial staging. On set, controlling natural light angles and leveraging the rolling terrain of the grass were crucial to capturing great frames. When confronted with an expansive floral expanse, framing should bypass cluttered foregrounds, using paths or floral contours as visual leading lines.
Travel and photography, for me, represent extending the 2D anime world straight into reality. Standing in this sea of blooms draped in these robes, the breeze catching the cloak conjured an effortless narrative without forcing theatrical poses. The entire journey was filled with the meticulousness of early prep and on-site maneuvers across rugged terrain and shifting sunlight. Every shutter actuation was a concrete realization of this fictional heroine and an authentic expression of my personal interpretation of her character.
