The eyes are truly the window of emotional expression that I value most in every Cosplay creation. Entering the PSD Annual Ceremony this time serves as a wonderful opportunity for me to sort out and present my understanding of the inner worlds of different characters. I have always believed that everyone possesses distinct preferences and interpretations of the same character; hence, what appears in photographs will vary endlessly from person to person. I prefer blending expressions, physical movements, and scenic settings to tangibly embody the facet of them I wish to express most.
Taking this blue-and-white look as an example: to convey an aura that is both elegant and imbued with biting, fierce power, during the Studio shoot I deliberately chose Black stockings and thigh straps, paired with knee-high boots and a massive blue crystal staff. This ensemble not only visually elongates proportions, but also adds a sensual sharpness to the aesthetic. During shooting, I consciously pulled back my chin with my eyes tilted slightly upward, controlling my facial muscles and eye movements to let my gaze radiate coolness and resolve. The weight of the prop genuinely affects how long one can sustain a pose, but for the sake of that expansive tension in the frame, I repeatedly adjusted my center of gravity until the movement looked both effortless and brimming with power. The cool-toned lighting and shadows ultimately delivered in this set wonderfully enhanced the character's aloof, mysterious nature.
Beyond a Studio shoot, I also love placing characters into realistic environments. When shooting outdoors in that light-blue kimono featuring traditional Japanese elements, the sunlight, traffic, and streetscape became natural reflectors and backdrops. I sought to capture the character's gentle, lively demeanor in everyday life through a warm gaze and a dynamic over-the-shoulder glance. The floral textures, pink tulle, and bows on the kimono appeared extraordinarily soft under natural daylight. This sense of effortless relaxation—devoid of overly calculated staging—paradoxically filled the frame with vibrant life.
Then there is that look leaning over a vintage bar counter: to match the moody, dim lighting and dramatic setting, I donned long silver gloves, leaning against the wooden bar in the most languid posture imaginable. The colossal green serpent tail prop delivered immense visual impact; I had to curve my body into a supple arch while holding a microphone, glancing toward the camera with eyes that seemed casual yet brimmed with subtle allure. The angle of every joint was dedicated to serving that enigmatic, seductive ambiance.
As for the fantasy look beneath cherry blossoms outdoors, or the ancient-style flowing dress seated on driftwood overlooking the sea, I strived to incorporate the element of wind into the movement design. The flow of long hair, the flutter of voluminous sleeves, and the poise of holding a blossom all served to grant the frame a fluid sense of beauty. Sitting upon the weathered wood as the breeze ruffled the skirt, I had to keep my core rock-steady to maintain an elegant posture at an angled tilt, with my gaze carrying a detached serenity that transcended the mundane world.
When it came to presenting the school uniform, it was an entirely different vibe. Through props like plush dolls, trays, and headphones, complemented by playful expressions and energetic movements, I channeled an aura of youthful vitality. The sway of twin tails and playful winks were all meant to convey lighthearted, cheerful emotions through the photos.
From preliminary costume and prop coordination to on-site lighting sculpting, down to controlling micro-expressions, every step of preparation and shooting is aimed at bringing the characters I love vividly to life in the three-dimensional world. Being able to showcase the facets I understand and adore through Cosplay is genuinely an immense joy. Whether in a glamorous Studio shoot or under outdoor natural light, what the lens captures is not merely outward appearance, but the emotional resonance I pour into these characters.
