The Mash cosplay Convention photos from this Mengka Anime Expo turned out great! Photographer Huangzu was exceptionally professional with on-site candid captures and framing angles. The convention lighting was relatively harsh and there was heavy foot traffic, meaning we had to wait patiently for the right moments to capture a clean backdrop. Fortunately, Huangzu is well-versed in navigating such crowded environments, utilizing the scattered ambient lights, lowering the shooting perspective, and adjusting our positioning to compress and minimize the presence of background crowds.
To stay true to the 2D character setting, I prepared a red tie and a sketchbook. In this outfit, the combination of a crisp white shirt, grey blazer, black skirt, and Black stockings creates a distinct and balanced visual focus. The subtle diamond-patterned texture on the red tie is very distinctive; paired with thin-rimmed glasses and holding the sketchbook, the foundational aura of the reliable yet sweet kouhai immediately came to life. To avoid passersby wandering into the frame, I often had to hold challenging poses for extended periods. For instance, the pose where I lift one leg while clutching the sketchbook made my leg muscles quite sore, but to highlight the character's nuanced charm and the sleek lines of the Black stockings, such precise poses and deliberate angles were essential.
Taking Convention photos is a completely different experience from controlled studio photography. Without dedicated studio lighting rigs, we relied entirely on on-site ambient lighting and a simple reflector board; consequently, the lighting was quite direct and hard, requiring expressive body language and nuanced facial expressions to balance the scene. The photographer timed the shutter releases to match the gaps between moving crowds, which demanded that I instantly snap into character and maintain sharp, focused eye contact with the camera. I often ponder how to pose more naturally for daily-life aesthetic looks, and attempting to recreate the character's everyday demeanor within the bustling, noisy convention atmosphere proved to be a fascinating and rewarding creative exercise.
Although shooting on the convention floor was physically exhausting, seeing these final images faithfully preserve that vivid, dynamic convention ambiance made every ounce of effort and time feel completely worthwhile. The meticulous preparation put into the costume and props was wonderfully showcased in this series, making the entire project a truly memorable and meaningful cosplay experience.
