This set of studio photos is one of my more satisfying outputs recently. Studio portraits truly test lighting mastery and physical control; the overall concept this time was to sculpt an aloof, cool detachment infused with mythical or fantasy notes. A great deal of thought went into everything from styling to the final shoot.
In truth, part of the inspiration for this session stemmed from a narrative about moonlight and imagination. In that story, Li Songlun conjures up a girl named Yuno across countless nights—a figure existing solely in the moon's glow. That deeply private blend of solitude and romance resonated with me profoundly. While the styling I wore here was not the twin-tailed girl from that tale, opting instead for a fantasy ensemble blending metallic textures with flowing drapes, both inherently express an unattainable, untouchable beauty.
Turning to the specific details of this set: this bright blue wig features high color saturation. To give it depth, I intentionally kept longer sideburns and soft gradient tips during styling, topping it with a golden laurel crown and wing hair accessories to craft a sacred yet unapproachable visual presence. The wardrobe predominantly pieces pure white fabrics together with extensive golden metal accents. The ring choker and gold embellishments across the chest were heavily weighted, carrying considerable heft when worn. I paired it with white arm sleeves and arm bracers, an open cut-out midriff, and layered drapes bound with intricate strapping on the lower half.
In terms of nuance, the crisscrossing white fabric bands wrapped along my legs bound quite tightly, requiring careful resetting whenever I shifted postures. While the gold ornamental cuffs on the knees and ankles looked gorgeous, prolonged wear left noticeable red marks on the skin. The nude platform high heels measured ten centimeters; maintaining balance to achieve that ethereal, otherworldly posture while keeping grounded took a real toll on the soles of my feet. The seated poses in Figures 3 and 1 were decided after discussions with the photographer—utilizing the height variations of cylindrical pedestals to elongate proportions through stretched, crossed legs, with the high heels extending the leg lines to sculpt cleaner, sleek curves. The kneeling pose on the rug in Figure 2 introduced a gentler, more intimate dynamic, where toying with the blue sphere added a touch of life to the frame.
Shooting this set demanded considerable stamina. For each movement reset, the blue ribbons draped behind had to be carefully rearranged, as holding arms even slightly too high or too low affected the visual harmony. The greatest allure of studio photography lies in immersing yourself entirely within lighting completely divorced from reality. Even if the studio floor is chaotic, the moment the key lights illuminate the set, that universe belongs purely to the frame.
Upon viewing this set, some might feel that piercing sense of unreality—much like that girl waiting at the alleyway entrance in the story. What we strove to portray was precisely this visual journey lingering along the boundary between dream and reality.
