This Studio portrait shoot had actually been in the conceptual stages since half a year ago. The character of Robin in Honkai: Star Rail features an abundance of costume details worth delving into. To maximize that sense of airy, graceful ethereality, a lot of thought went into selecting wardrobe fabrics. The bodice features an off-the-shoulder cut with delicate lace trimming, while the lower half is a multi-tiered pleated translucent white chiffon skirt. The deep-blue waist ribbon serves as the visual centerpiece of the ensemble, breaking the monotony of expansive white and grounding the palette with composed poise in this Honkai: Star Rail cosplay.
Wig styling was another major focus of this photoshoot. Robin's hair color is a crystalline, translucent light blue, requiring repeated curling iron adjustments to achieve that naturally voluminous, gentle wave. The golden halo floating above her head was a handmade prop; to make it appear naturally suspended from various shooting angles, my assistant and I built an invisible wire support at the back, anchored securely into the inner wig cap with bobby pins. For makeup, bright blue colored contacts were worn to match the character's eye color, while the eye makeup was kept delicate and translucent rather than heavy, harmonizing with the overarching ethereal mood.
The choice of shooting venue was quite unique: during pre-production communications, we specifically booked a studio featuring high-gloss reflective flooring. Given Robin's lore as a singer and galactic idol, this reflective floor with its water-like mirror texture expands spatial depth across the frame. Posing barefoot on the reflective film actually demands balance, especially when shifting postures on a folding chair; the direct tactile feedback from the soles introduced subtle nuances to my body language. The photographer was equally meticulous with lighting: pairing a soft overhead top light with front fill illumination perfectly showcased the sheer pleated textures of the chiffon skirt while preventing white fabrics from blowing out on camera.
The indoor temperature on the shoot day wasn't particularly warm; although the reflective surface film had been cleaned, stepping onto it barefoot still took some courage. To keep facial expressions composed, I wore soft slippers off-camera, kicking them aside just seconds before each take. In pose design, instead of sweeping or dramatic actions, I focused on seated postures, conveying emotion through subtle wrist turns, relaxed shoulders, and expressive gazes. Raising one hand to lightly brush my neck was designed to echo the off-the-shoulder neckline while visually elongating my body lines.
To interpret Robin faithfully, I rewatched in-game cutscenes repeatedly, studying her gentle demeanor tinged with a slight sense of detachment. The cinched-waist tailoring of the costume tests figure lines, but the deep-blue satin ribbon offered great flattering definition; as sitting angles shifted, the ribbon's drape changed as well—details requiring constant on-the-spot adjustments before the lens. Combining perspective lines with the reflective floor thoroughly tested core stability, requiring constant micro-adjustments to keep my spine straight and posture natural in every frame. In the finished shots, the interplay of light and shadow achieved the silent yet magnetic tension I had envisioned. The seamless synergy among hair/makeup, photography, and post-processing was essential to realizing this project.
