For this photography work, I chose a classic white semi-translucent fabric as the main element, paired with butterfly hair accessories featuring a red, white, and blue color scheme and side braids; the material of the outfit creates great light refraction effects in front of the lens. The addition of the over-the-knee socks outfit maintains the lively feel of an anime character.
The shooting environment consisted of warm yellow paper lanterns and solid wood furniture, with a background of large white faux floral trees, creating a warm, retro Chinese-style atmosphere. Under this warm light, the edges of the white top were illuminated, allowing the sheer and layered quality of the outfit to shine through. In addition, the wide black collar accessory and patterns dotted with gold and red motifs acted as a visual anchor, balancing the lightness of the white. The red thick rope and beads wrapped around the waist were highlights, extending visually to the leg lines.
The low-angle shot was a highlight I was quite satisfied with when selecting these images. A low camera position enhances the tension and magnifies the geometric lines of the white stockings and the skirt hem. In the first close-up, the slightly raised arm and the extended sleeve beautifully showcase the tailoring, and the composition keeps the focus on the character's face and upper-body prop details.
During the shoot, special attention was paid to the placement of the clothing. Because of the sheer fabric, it easily creases, so the sleeves needed constant adjustment to let light penetrate evenly. Meanwhile, the braided sections of the long hair required specific angles to avoid looking too messy. Regarding atmosphere, fill light between the wooden boards and warm light was crucial; backlighting used soft reflectors to brighten facial shadows, ensuring clear features and sharp eye makeup.
This look utilizing Chinese-style elements also requires relaxed body posture. Poses focused on relaxation, with core muscles slightly tightened to avoid bulky shoulder lines. The drape of the sleeves required natural arm placement to convey a carefree look. Through these close-up and full-body studio portrait sessions, I aimed to restore the agile and free-spirited nature of the character in music. In post-processing, I chose high-saturation warm tones to elevate the vibe, instantly evoking a serene space filled with warm light, flowers, and wood.
Although I've shot many different styles, this one is rare in retaining classic Vocaloid character features while incorporating many Chinese-style elements in a real-life set. For me, every Yuezheng Ling cosplay outfit must integrate my own understanding and perspective. This time, I focused on highlighting the character through the aesthetic beauty of light, shadow, and the material itself.
Considering composition, lighting, and performance, I selected the first photo as the cover. The lighting atmosphere is most concentrated there, and the posture and expression strike a perfect balance between relaxation and professionalism.
