[Lappland cosplay] Arknights Fantasy in the Mirage, shooting a dark blockbuster with iPhone in an anime convention photo set

Completing this shoot in the Beijing IDO anime convention photo set with an iPhone 14 Pro was actually a better experience than expected.
Because the on-site lighting was extremely complex, shooting portraits with a mobile phone in low light really tests basic skills. Focusing on a dark style interweaving red light and a black background, the crosses, iron chains, and birdcages in the anime convention photo set added a lot to the picture. Photographic lighting during the shoot is a huge test; to capture this level of light and shadow with a phone, besides relying on the red ambient lights in the set, it's necessary to manually slightly lower the highlights and lift the shadows, then adjust the texture in post-processing to restore the cold and glamorous feeling seen by the naked eye as much as possible.
Regarding character portrayal, this Fantasy in the Mirage outfit is a quite special version. The black glossy trench coat paired with shorts and long boots, combined with animal ears and gray hair, gives a very lethal vibe. The tattoo stickers on the legs and the glossiness of the boots all need the right light to stand out.
In terms of composition, I tried high-angle shots and low-angle upward shots, and found that the iPhone's wide-angle lens is actually very effective when space in the set is limited. It not only captures long legs but also perfectly fits the outline of the iron cage behind. For that pose sitting high with a raised leg, the wide-angle lens was used to stretch the leg lines, which, combined with the leg tattoos and boots, showcased the character's aggressiveness.
Special thanks to Projekt Red @Chaoku for her cooperation; the two-person composition gave the picture more storytelling. Handling the focus during a two-person shoot is a difficult point; to ensure a clear image, I mainly relied on predicting the positioning in advance and manually locking the focus.
Speaking of photography, photographic lighting is definitely the soul. In the dark background, using red light to illuminate the chains and background while cold white light hits the face, this red-and-black contrast directly maxes out the atmosphere. The use of props in the anime convention photo set is crucial; crosses, skulls, and candles made this shoot not just about taking pictures of people, but more like building a dark little theater.
People were coming and going on the day of the shoot, and facing the onlookers inside the anime convention photo set actually tests your thick skin quite a bit, but it became natural once getting into character. The whole shoot took about two hours, and the iPhone 14 Pro's battery life was quite decent. Although I must admit that a mobile phone cannot compare to the rich background bokeh of a DSLR, it wins in flexibility, and it still produces great pictures with the support of cinematic color grading in post-processing.
During preliminary preparation, we entered the set quite early. When the light hadn't gone completely dark, we first shot a set of close-ups to check the skin texture. Because the saturation of red light is very high and easily overexposed, I slightly lowered the red primary color in post-processing to make the skin look fairer and more translucent. For shooting this dark style, the coordination of eyes and movements is particularly important; that slightly crazy feeling of Lappland needs to be conveyed through the alienation in the eyes and the swinging of the weapon.
We also designed high and low positioning in the two-person photos, using the contrast of sharp foreground and blurred background to create a sense of oppression. We hoped all the preparation of makeup, styling, and props would restore that cold yet elegant temperament as much as possible.
The biggest realization after the shoot is still that saying: photography is indeed the art of photographic lighting. By using light well, even an originally ordinary venue can present a high-class texture through light and shadow. Thanks to the joint efforts of my friends, this Fantasy in the Mirage anime convention photo set journey was a great self-challenge, and the process of portraying a character under light and shadow is also extremely enjoyable.
