The last photoshoot I had in China actually had some quite amusing stories behind it. Take the backdrop behind these photos, for example—at the time, the photographer and I laughed our heads off looking at the set arrangement, even teasing that these magnificent white Roman columns paired with that ultra-bright blue reflective floor were practically the ultimate upgraded version of a "Northeast Chinese Bathhouse."
Teasing aside, the final visual output of this set turned out exceptionally well. The base palette for this character is platinum-gold, so the pure white architectural framing alongside gold-trimmed relief decorations created an incredible echo with the character's wig, animal ears, and headpieces. The studio lighting setup was also very thoughtful—one look at the softbox fill light on the right shows how the side lighting brought out the subtle sheen of this lightweight gauzy outfit. The sheer tulle on the shoulders and small circular button details on the chest looked exceedingly textured in close-up shots.
The weather during that Shenyang photoshoot was also wonderful. Even though we were on an indoor set, the white drapes and holy statues conferred a serene atmosphere throughout. Especially with the harp and small boat design in the center of the scene—at first I thought it might clash with the character style, but once I stood on the blue reflective floor framed by the golden harp and carved patterns, a sacred yet dreamlike sensation emerged. I even considered sitting down to rest on that golden wrought-iron bench for a while.
As a cosplayer who frequently does these photoshoots, I place great emphasis on clean makeup. Since this shoot needed to fit the character's white-haired concept, the base makeup had to be translucent. I chose a vivid red lipstick to brighten my complexion, preventing my facial features from being washed out by the pure white wig. The wig used this time was a straight style, and the bangs' arc was adjusted repeatedly so as not to block my eyes. Taking selfies was also half the fun—the few photos shared above were taken casually while the photographer was adjusting equipment. Although a phone camera has a big gap compared to the main rig, with that light hitting my face alongside the delicate white tulle dress, I felt the overall atmosphere was captured well. Every time I look back at those raw phone selfies, it feels like stepping back onto the set.
Although the set crew joked about making it look like a bathhouse, "Northeast romance" probably means this extreme pairing of gold and white combined with the mystical blue wave reflection. Mixing white, gold, and blue is actually hard to balance, but here their synthesis yielded an ethereal atmosphere resembling a church or shrine, producing an ideal final render.
In this community, friends often ask where to shoot divine photos. Sometimes you really don't need rare or grand scenery—a carefully built indoor set like this can yield breathtaking results. As long as the costume and makeup pass the bar, lighting is on point, and the cosplayer understands the character's vibe, fantastic photos will follow.
The photographer was also exhausted that day, running back and forth to adjust angles and capture the sense of depth between me and the backdrop. I remember when shooting side-facing standing poses, the lights would occasionally overexpose highlights, requiring manual parameter tweaks. However, after a few trial runs, we always quickly locked onto that perfect angle of light refraction, capturing a crisp, high-contrast texture between light and shadow.
Though this outfit looks lightweight, its accessories posed quite a few hassles. The gold leaf headpiece was fixed, but to avoid looking heavy, it was tilted intentionally to keep the styling from feeling rigid. The small Animal ear wig was also vital—once worn, I had to constantly monitor whether it wobbled on my head, otherwise dynamic shots would easily ruin the illusion.
Every time I go for an outdoor or studio shoot, unexpected little episodes always happen, which is why I cherish keeping these memories. Back then, everyone poked fun at the whimsical set while seriously producing shots. Looking back at these photos years later, I won't just remember doing this Platinum cosplay; I'll recall those joyful moments cracking jokes with the photographer in Shenyang in front of a set that looked like the White House.
Reviewing this set of works, it didn't just accomplish a specific character representation; it recorded the mood of that exact shooting moment. Those seemingly extravagant sets don't need to be understood in a strictly realistic sense—interpreting them through the character's own lore can generate wonderful creations. Looking at the lilies, golden ornaments, and small boat placed in the scene, despite having joked about them, it was precisely the stacking of these elements that imbued the entire picture with a sense of storytelling.
Sharing these thoughts is both a tribute to that shoot and a discussion on character interpretation and scene utilization. From combing the wig to layering garments and utilizing photography lights, I believe anyone passionate about this hobby can appreciate that unique sense of accomplishment.
