Tonight's night shoot has finally wrapped up, and while the post-shoot excitement is still fresh, I wanted to share the creative thought process behind this purple cheongsam look.
For this shoot, I picked a purple lace dress in a modernized cheongsam cut, primarily wanting to break away from conventional reds or neutral tones. Under evening streetlights, purple inherently brings a hazy, mysterious aura that flatters fair skin while accentuating feminine elegance. The lace fabric fits comfortably and breathes well, while the halter neckline and traditional Chinese frog closures preserve classic cultural elements without losing modern appeal. The folding fan in hand served as the crowning touch: its purple leaf harmonized with the dress, while the floral and butterfly motifs added a dash of agility, with the cascading tassel creating great visual rhythm in the night scene.
For makeup, I deliberately chose pink-purple eyeshadow to complement the overall color scheme, pairing it with blue-gray contact lenses to deepen the gaze. Long, straight black hair with blunt bangs and a dainty hairpin framed the face while adding a youthful touch. The jade bangle on my wrist was a personal favorite addition, aiming to infuse a touch of gentle, graceful Oriental charm.
In terms of pose design, the standing shot featured a 'shh' finger-to-lips gesture, with a subtle forward lean that accentuated curves while introducing a playful sense of interaction; holding the fan behind my back kept the frame from feeling static. The crouching pose positioned the fan partially across the face to create a classic half-hidden visual focal point, gazing straight into the lens to shorten the distance with the viewer.
The ancient town streets at night, combined with the warm bokeh of red and yellow lanterns, formed an exquisite warm-toned backdrop. This kind of night photography demands high-precision fill lighting: we placed a soft light directly in front of the face and added a gentle rim light from the side and rear to separate the subject from the dark background. The wet reflections on the pavement also added rich layers to the scene, evoking a post-rain ambiance.
While I usually do character cosplay, this session had no specific fictional persona, allowing me to explore Chinese-style fashion through a cheongsam and a folding fan with complete creative freedom. Before every shoot, I repeatedly try on the wardrobe and test the makeup to ensure every nuance matches the mysterious, captivating atmosphere in my mind. This process of exploring different aesthetics is truly enchanting in itself. Next up is sorting through the raw files—huge thanks to the hardworking photographer and crew members today!
