Shooting this Sun Quan Cosplay photoshoot in a classical garden setting happened to coincide with the natural light and shadow cast by tree shades and corridors, which perfectly matched the character's own aura.
The details of this costume are actually very textured, with black and blue as the main tones overall. The outer layer is a black wide-sleeved outer robe adorned with golden auspicious cloud hidden patterns, adding a sense of magnificence to the low-profile base color. The inner blue fabric has a velvet-like luster, and the red and white rope knots and golden outlines at the neckline make the overall Hanfu styling clearly layered without looking cluttered. Especially the black leather girdle at the waist and the techwear-style pendants mix the design ideas of traditional Chinese garments with modern accessories, perfectly highlighting the character's combination of noble temperament and general-like capability.
The shooting location was chosen in a Chinese garden surrounded by corridors and pools enveloped in vegetation. The wooden structures of the corridors and the scenery reflected on the water's surface created a beautiful color clash with this outfit. At that time, the natural light in the garden filtered through the dense leaves onto the main subject, forming dappled light and shadow, giving the entire frame a chilly and serene atmosphere that perfectly matched the deep inner thoughts in the character's lines. To better capture the character and enhance this Chinese-style photography piece, quite a lot of time was spent on makeup and hair; the red hair needed to be styled with a fluffy yet sharp texture, and the black hair crown on top of the head required a lot of hairspray to stay secure. Paired with light blue contact lenses and intentionally deepened brow and eye contours, it restored that aura of majesty and youthful pride as much as possible.
On-site scheduling was handled by photographer Yiluo, and I really love her capture of movement details. Whether it was standing with hands resting at the waist or leaning sideways against a pillar, a stronger visual tension was created through the perfect light angles. Without needing many complex movements, simply gazing calmly at the lens or raising a hand slightly could convey the stubbornness and ambition the character wished to express. The day of the shoot was indeed very hot; the clothing had great texture but was also very heavy. Wearing it layered over layers and staying outdoors for a long time was truly a bit stifling, especially when walking to the unshaded rockery area where the heatwave hit us right in the face. However, seeing the final photos, all this hard work felt completely worth it.
This Sun Quan Cosplay process allowed me to more deeply experience the complexity of this character from the role-playing game From Madness to Courage; he does not simply rely on his family's aura but possesses his own unique thoughts and ruthlessness. Standing on mossy stones or sitting on an ancient architectural bench, the images present his inner persistence of "I don't regret it... I want the world." It was a highly enjoyable shooting experience, and I hope to showcase the unique solemnity and tragic heroism belonging to the sons of Jiangdong through these textured frames.
