Guangzhou Tower's neon light belts reflect on the river surface; this interplay of cool tones and warm yellow streetlights creates a supreme backdrop for shooting night portraits in JK style. This time I cosplayed Firefly from Honkai: Star Rail, but made a casual JK style attempt without going full mecha style, instead keeping her signature long silver-white hair tinted with pale green, paired with a classic sailor top and plaid mini skirt, hoping to capture the feeling of an anime character stepping into reality in a city night.
In this look, the cropped white sailor suit design is very flattering for body proportions, raising the waistline, while the cinched waist hem avoids looking bulky during posing. The gray plaid pleated skirt is the soul of JK style, with a comfortable puffiness that drapes or flutters naturally whether standing or walking. The detail I cared about most was the white thigh-high socks, which appear exceptionally clean under night portrait flashlights, brightening the lower body well with a tiny paw print pattern at the sock band to add cuteness and layering without making white thigh-highs look monotonous. On my feet were brown loafers, creating a unified color scheme with the deep brown vintage academy bag in my hand, which also stuffed a bouquet of light-colored flowers as props to relieve hand awkwardness while posing.
Shooting took place on the riverside boardwalk near Guangzhou Tower, where traffic was relatively sparse at night, keeping the background very clean. Since it's a night portrait session, light control was especially crucial. Photographer @DianzhangDD used a large aperture lens paired with off-camera flashes to dim the background, giving the subject's face very even light and making skin tone look translucent. The surrounding environment was rich in light sources—the bridge across the river had bright cyan neon light belts, while the distant tower shifted through colorful lighting effects. Blurred by the large aperture, these light sources turned into beautiful circular bokeh spots, making the main subject stand out sharply.
To capture natural dynamics, we walked back and forth along the boardwalk for a long time. Originally just carrying the bag walking forward casually, the photographer snapped the stride moment—the composition tilted slightly, giving an overall vibe much like street style rather than stiff posing. There were also poses leaning against thick stone railings with green plants and river views in the background, where leaning back looked very relaxed. The biggest fear in shooting night portraits is a pitch-black face or blown-out background; we used off-camera flash fill light to preserve ambient light while making face contours more 3D. Later, we tried using a smartphone screen's reflection for night shots, utilizing screen light as face fill-light; this everyday slice of life often holds more vitality than deliberately holding poses.
From clothing to hairstyle to accessories, I tried my best to give this JK style outfit both the character's recognizability and integration with Guangzhou Tower's nighttime cyberpunk feel. In night portraits, makeup needs to focus more on contouring because flash light easily flattens face features, so I slightly deepened facial shadows and applied cool-toned eye makeup, matching silver-white wig seamlessly without looking abrupt on camera. The shoot went quickly, wrapping up in about an hour thanks to the photographer's precise snapshots and venue cooperation. Many people shoot official sets at conventions nowadays, but I feel appearing in urban street nightscapes with casual JK style reveals another side of characters in real life. Watching the river breeze brush past hair strands with flowing city lights nearby, the picture in the viewfinder is precisely the atmosphere I wanted to present.
