This time, I am sharing a rock band style Rei Ayanami cosplay from EVA: Neon Genesis Evangelion.
This shoot aimed to showcase a vibe different from her original quiet, cool detachment. Regarding outfit details, the gray bodysuit features strap detailing at the neckline, while the jacket collar and cuffs are trimmed with white plush fur; the red belts and chains created a fierce contrast against the dominant blue tone. The legs were paired with white over-the-knee Stockings connected to leg garters and metal chains. When wearing it, the length of the chains needed careful adjustment. For makeup and styling, the crimson pupils were the finishing touch. The wig was a light blue bob cut, complemented by cool-toned makeup.
During the shoot, the photographer used blue seamless background paper and cast a very hard spotlight in this Blue-toned photography session. The intense light sliced out crisp highlights and shadows, cutting cleanly across my face and attire. Props included a white electric guitar, a plush bunny, and a black cross. Holding the guitar required attention to wrist positioning while aligning with the lens angle. The plush bunny was held in hand or placed by my feet, adding a touch of contrast to the edgy, cold look. Between shots, we had to repeatedly check if the light was blocked, readjusting the ladder or speaker positions.
In this photoshoot, I experimented with various sitting and standing postures: standing on a white pedestal pulling the bunny, or sitting on a silver ladder angled slightly sideways to make the composition feel fluid and expansive. Under hard light, subtle shifts in facial expressions are prominent, so the gaze needed to remain mostly vacant to match the character's persona. The entire process demanded intense concentration, immersing myself fully into the shoot. This endeavor allowed me to experience the character's versatility across alternate concepts; compared to previous works, this set of photos carried stronger visual impact, authentically documenting this Rock style interpretation.
In fact, when creating this Rock style, I often wondered what sparks would fly when an inherently quiet character merges into a rock theme. Those red belts and chains carry an innate rebellious edge; paired with long Stockings and plush trims, they evoke a burning fire beneath an icy exterior. Before shooting, I specifically adjusted the wig's fluffiness and fringe placement to ensure the head silhouette remained full from any angle. The floor was rather cold during shooting, requiring endurance in this outfit, but seeing the crisp light-and-shadow division in the finished photos made everything worthwhile. This set belongs to a solid, edgy stage aesthetic overall—with blue light splitting the background and red accents in the foreground, creating immense visual impact in our Blue-toned photography. By the way, while holding the guitar looked cool, practicing how to hold it naturally for the lens took plenty of time. I hope to try more varied conceptual styles in the future and explore even more possibilities for the character.
