For this shoot, I chose the classic campus uniform look for Rei Ayanami cosplay. The blue-and-white color scheme paired with a red bow tie looks exceptionally fresh and clean visually. To complement the character's cool and aloof traits, I specially picked a light blue wig to harmonize with the overall color tone. The white shirt fabric is relatively crisp and structured, with the red ribbon tie neatly knotted, and the hem of the blue pinafore dress sits comfortably above the knee to flatter the leg lines nicely. I opted for mirror selfies during the shoot to have more direct, intuitive control over image composition.
Considering the character's distinct atmosphere, I paid special attention to pairing over-the-knee Black stockings—the elasticity of the socks and the way the cuffs outline the contours of the legs are crucial. The shoot took place indoors, where beige curtains and a white carpet provided soft, diffused ambient light. A fill light placed in the corner of the room rendered facial features and costume textures much clearer. The entire shooting process was quite relaxed; without needing overly complex poses, simply sitting naturally sideways, stretching the legs, or standing upright resonated well with her subtle sense of detachment.
This was also in response to the Doujin Creation Festival event, so I prepared this Anime cosplay ensemble with extra care. Throughout the shoot, I carefully observed the knotting of the bow tie to ensure it stayed secure, while adjusting the suspender straps of the pinafore dress to bring overall proportions closer to the character's original feel. The Black stockings on the legs served as an eye-catching detail, providing a slimming visual effect without appearing bulky. The harmony between hair, attire, and lighting successfully crafted a tranquil sense of campus nostalgia in static frames.
Although mirror selfies lack the dynamic scenery changes of outdoor shoots, they create extended visual depth through the mirror within a limited indoor space. I am very satisfied with the composition of the second photo reaching forward—centered without cropping, fully showcasing the aesthetic charm of this School uniform cosplay. Lens focal length and distance also required careful handling to prevent distortion. To keep the frame clean, I avoided cluttered backgrounds, leaving only curtains, shelves, and small decor to enhance the ambient mood.
Pre-shoot prep was straightforward, mainly ironing the garments and styling the wig. For lighting, a fill light positioned at the front-side simulated natural light, keeping the white shirt pure while fully highlighting the textures of the blue dress and Black stockings. When taking mirror selfies, avoiding glare on the mirror and finding the right angle were crucial. My years of cosplay experience have taught me that accurately portraying a character requires not only the costume, but also conveying character personality through environment, poses, and meticulous control over static visual details.
