A set of Asuka Cosplay convention photos captured at Anime Star City last Sunday, which I'm sorting out and sharing while they're still fresh. This time, I cosplayed Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion. The wig chosen was a long, straight orange-red version, worn with the classic red A10 nerve connector hair clips, and I used light blue contact lenses to recreate the character's gaze. The upper body features a red-and-white striped cropped tank top paired with a red zipped sports jacket, which can be worn open or zipped depending on the vibe. The lower body consists of slightly distressed light-blue denim shorts, along with white socks with red borders and black-and-white sports shoes, presenting an overall sporty, casual, 2D everyday feel.
Since the weekend crowds at Anime Star City are indeed massive—almost comparable to a small-to-medium-sized anime convention that day—finding a clean background indoors was practically impossible. So, we decided to head to an outdoor shooting spot instead. We mainly utilized a motorcycle outside as a prop, which not only anchored the visual weight of the frame but also allowed for a more natural extension of the limbs through leaning and straddling poses. In reality, the weather in Guangzhou was extremely muggy that day. Wearing this sports jacket under the 30-plus degree heat, along with the wig and wig cap on my head, I started dripping with sweat after less than twenty minutes of outdoor shooting. However, I pushed through to preserve the texture of this outfit under natural light, making it a great Guangzhou photography booking experience.
The lighting for this photo set basically came from the afternoon sun, a time slot with relatively soft light and a touch of side-backlighting. The photographer's lens focus was mainly locked onto the face and orange-red hair. By using a wide aperture to blur the background trees, signs, and passersby into bokeh, we could capture a relatively quiet atmosphere dedicated solely to the character, even in such a crowded venue. For the posing, I mainly went with a single hand holding one side of the hair ends, paired with a casual head-tilt or looking slightly to the side. It wasn't overly forced, keeping the overall tone of the actions lazy and relaxed. I also tried a pose with one foot lightly stepping on the motorcycle's exhaust pipe, hoping to accent the details of the white socks and sports shoes in the frame. Looking back at these photos the next day, it's great to quickly review which movements look more natural and which lighting worked best. After all, during the photography process, the unspoken chemistry between the cosplayer and the photographer forms the foundation of a good piece of work. Anime Star City is highly accessible with its convenient transport, but if you want to shoot great results in a place like this, you really need to be more flexible in utilizing the limited outdoor resources.
