[Rei Ayanami cosplay] Neon Genesis Evangelion: A Serene Girl on the Reef

Changing into this white short-sleeved shirt and deep-blue pinafore dress, the red ribbon at the collar swayed gently in the wind. Stepping onto the cool stones in Black over-the-knee stockings, I could still feel the dampness; the waves crashed against the reefs, occasionally splashing water onto the tops of the stockings. Styling the silver-blue wig took quite some time, and I adjusted the angle of the bangs multiple times before finally achieving that expressionless yet detached look.

The location chosen was by the sea for this Seaside photoshoot; the distant city skyline appeared hazy, and the pier extending to the left gave the composition extra depth. The ambient light had a purplish tint on-site; to capture that ethereal aesthetic, I adjusted the color balance in post-processing, giving the overall atmosphere a slightly melancholic pink-purple tone. In the first photo sitting sideways, the leg lines are beautifully accentuated by the Black over-the-knee stockings against a serene atmosphere. In the second photo, curled up with my face buried in my knees, even without seeing my face, that unique sense of loneliness reaches its peak. The third photo is my personal favorite: reaching toward the camera, all my weight was pressed onto my feet to maintain balance; though a bit tiring, the visual result turned out great.

Shooting on the rocks is genuinely tough—every step requires caution while maintaining a relaxed posture in front of the lens. Still, being able to capture an authentic state makes it all worthwhile. This shoot also gave me a fresh perspective on styling Black over-the-knee stockings: in a seaside setting, the contrast between white sneakers and black stockings looks remarkably high-end. As a cosplayer, treating every costume and every character with dedication has always been my commitment. As for the character herself, I tried my best to lean into that cool, aloof demeanor, keeping expressions restrained in the frame. While the photoshoot was exhausting, it was also full of fun. The narrative depth expressed through composition and color grading is what makes this set truly compelling.

The sea breeze was quite strong at times, making keeping the bangs steady a real technical challenge. To make the sea appear broader, I deliberately selected a slightly lower camera angle, utilizing the distant city silhouette as a backdrop. White platform sneakers were tricky to balance on the rocks with slippery green moss underneath, so I took every step cautiously while striving to maintain a natural posture before the camera. I feel this character is somewhat fragile yet possesses her own unique worldview; stillness and detachment are her baseline. I translated this understanding into physical expression—like the self-defense when curling up, and the tentative exploration when reaching out. The pink-purple tone chosen is visually soft and perfectly fits the seaside dusk. I am truly satisfied with the final result of this Seaside photoshoot.
