[Rei Ayanami cosplay] White and Red by the Night Water: Serene Moments of Neon Genesis Evangelion

For this shoot, nighttime riverside shallows were chosen as the main scene; reflections on the water surface effectively enhanced the layering and spatial depth of the composition. Since the concept aimed to balance cool serenity with atmospheric depth, many considerations went into the interplay of environment and lighting.

To fit Rei Ayanami's setting, the outfit featured a high-cut white bodysuit paired with White stockings. The White stockings material is form-fitting and prone to reflecting harsh light, so during prep, water was sprayed onto them to make them adhere closer to the skin, and controlling the lighting ratio during post-processing took some time. The red lance is a solid, elongated version with considerable weight; to keep it perfectly straight in the third back-view photo, my arms were engaged throughout the entire shoot, but fortunately, the final lines and composition turned out flawless.

In terms of makeup, a light blue wig with a subtle gradient was chosen and layered through careful trimming. When shooting, the gaze angle was adjusted to look more levelly into the lens with relaxed facial muscles, conveying an emotionless, detached expression.

Since this was shot at night, despite the strong river wind and chilly water, we set up a dual-light configuration for this Night photography session to capture the cool waterside ambiance and the blurred bokeh of the background bridge and city lights. In the first photo, the key hard light struck from the front-side, sculpting three-dimensional depth and body contours, enhancing the allure of the White stockings and high-cut cut without overexposing the face. The second shot switched to soft light, creating a dreamy vibe paired with background light spots. The third was a pure backlit shot, using the shimmering water surface to fill the shadows while maximally accentuating the character's silhouette.

Wading through the water had its challenges—with subtle ripples on the surface, keeping steady footing without slipping meant carefully testing shoe traction and step placements. Although this outfit seems minimal in fabric, it places high demands on baseline body lines under intricate lighting; to achieve great visual results, I did plenty of preparation and conditioning beforehand.

Wanting to highlight this specific 2D character, prop details and costume color-matching could afford zero mistakes. The entire process was fulfilling, with great synergy with the photographer, successfully expressing urban solitude through cool nighttime tones. The retouching philosophy centered on restraint: avoiding heavy special effects, focusing instead on restoring the raw photo's color gradations, adjusting shadow details, and retaining authentic skin texture and fabric grain.
