This set was captured on Day 3 of the 35th Firefly ACG Expo. The weather and lighting were genuinely on our side that day, and choosing this outdoor spot with lush greenery and a white swing instantly elevated the atmosphere. Starting with the styling: I chose a classic blue-and-white sailor suit, where the pale blue stripes on the sailor collar matched the pleated skirt perfectly. The pink gradient ribbon on the chest served as the focal point, breaking up the solid color palette. To complement the outfit's cute aesthetic, my hair was styled into double buns accented with a matching pair of pink-and-blue plush cartoon hair accessories. For makeup, the focus was placed heavily on blush and eyes—sweeping generous amounts beneath the eyes and across the apples of the cheeks, paired with dark contact lenses to project a Japanese anime-inspired look.
We experimented with diverse poses on the swing. At first, I sat demurely with my legs pressed together, but feeling it lacked energy, I began leaning back, stretching my arms, and gripping the swing ropes. In one shot, I took off the black platform Mary Janes and set them on the ground, swinging gently in just White stockings; this created a much more relaxed, casual slice-of-life vibe, stripping away any stiff posing artificiality. Capturing Convention photos always tests your ability to find clean angles amidst crowded, busy backgrounds. This swing spot was fantastic because the dense foliage behind acted as a natural backdrop. Dialing in a wide aperture easily melted away the passing crowd. Natural daylight is truly the best filter—without harsh flash strobes, both skin tones and the sheen on the White stockings came through luminous and clear.
Photographing White stockings is very demanding on lighting: if the light is too harsh overhead or too dim, legs can look bloated or overly reflective. That afternoon, the soft ambient light paired with the woven hemp rope texture of the swing created a gorgeous textural interplay against the White stockings and blue skirt. The stockings chosen had slight compression, which not only smoothed and tightened the leg lines, but also prevented them from looking flatly stark white, preserving a lovely translucency in natural light. Since the sailor skirt is pleated, keeping the hem neatly fanned out while seated and using a slightly lower camera angle visually elongated the legs. Beyond the photographer's guidance, taking great Convention photos comes down to letting yourself relax—just interact with the swing as if it were the sofa in your own living room.
