For this Spring Missive themed shoot, pre-production prioritized wardrobe, props, and emotional tone. The shoot took place in an authentic classroom set at Ruyuan Film Studio under warm afternoon sunlight, which rendered skin tones with high translucency and established the core lighting baseline.
For hair and makeup: colored contacts were used to reflect the character's pink-violet pupils, creating vivid visual contrast. The bangs were carefully sculpted, allowing the mint-green gradient twintails to display distinct dimensionality under the lighting. Makeup emphasized soft pink-purple eyeshadow and extended lashes. To harmonize with the clean everyday tone of the uniform, a velvety matte foundation with a soft-focus effect was used while minimizing heavy contouring, yielding a soft, CG-like finish. The bow headpiece was anchored securely to avoid shifting during turns.
The outfit was a custom sailor uniform featuring a grey-white spliced collar, accented with a yellow-green plaid brooch and ribbon. The pleated skirt carried an intertwined grey-and-blue plaid with nice drape, spreading naturally when seated. Chunky black leather loafers paired with White stockings elongated the leg line under cool key light. The white tights offered a pristine look and caught crisp edge-light, serving as an essential visual anchor in full-body shots.
The photographer employed medium-to-telephoto focal lengths to compress space, naturally blurring the chalkboard and wooden podium to isolate the subject. Using classroom furniture, poses included perching cross-legged atop desks or sitting along the wooden platform edge. Holding a brown retro schoolbag reinforced authentic student life, while holding a pen or leaning against the wooden floor evoked a relaxed, breezy spring afternoon. The bag was varied between sitting beside me and resting on my knees to diversify compositions.
Throughout posing, we aimed for candid nuances—resting a finger against the chin or subtly tilting the head—avoiding stiff, over-posed gestures. Side backlighting from windows caught the subtle translucency of the White stockings, giving the legs clean contouring and fair tone. Gaze was directed slightly off-lens rather than staring down the barrel to keep expressions natural, with fingers extended slightly to elongate hand lines.
Post-processing preserved native hues while boosting highlights on skin and hair and deepening shadows for dimension, keeping the palette crisp and translucent rather than over-saturated to fit the Spring Missive concept.
