Shooting this Qipao cosplay photoshoot for Firefly from Honkai: Star Rail was a truly special experience. Even though I am sensitive to the cold and cannot stand night winds, I still love stargazing. Just like how baking a cake can be troublesome, I still bake them because I love gifting them to cherished people and seeing them smile. I also love seeking out adorable dresses—not to show off, but simply because it brightens my own mood. This Qipao coordinate was precisely an outfit that lifted my spirits.
The standout highlight of this session was utilizing both digital and film mediums simultaneously: odd-numbered images were captured digitally, while even-numbered ones were shot on Fujifilm Premium 400. Digital offers razor-sharp clarity, flawlessly preserving fine textile nuances like the subtle jacquard along the qipao collar, the sheen of dangling tassels, and the plush softness of the white faux-fur rug. Film photography, conversely, introduces an organic, vintage warmth; under amber lamps, it envelops the frame in quiet, narrative atmosphere. While straight-out-of-camera digital colors were stunning, the unpredictability of film always sparks anticipation—developing each roll brings the thrill of unboxing a mystery, with both mediums shining in their own right.
The wardrobe merged traditional mandarin collars and frog fasteners with modern fantasy elements like off-the-shoulder cuts and detached sleeves, worn over a white lace mini dress with a palette dominated by dark tones, white, and vibrant blue. The set overflowed with classical oriental charm—a circular moon gate, gilded carvings, paper lanterns, blue-and-white porcelain, and white plush rugs crafted a tranquil, warm retreat. I posed barefoot to heighten that languid, unscripted domestic feel.
The set design offered genuine coziness; wooden tatami platforms and heavy plush throws kept the space from feeling chilly. Being prone to the cold, I bundled up in blankets between takes, yet the moment the camera pointed my way, I wanted to channel my best energy. The photographer handled lighting with great nuance; circular glowing light fixtures and lanterns provided gentle ambient mood, softening skin tones beautifully. Posing remained relaxed and organic—leaning against the wooden daybed, twirling a round silk fan, or lightly pinching a white decorative sphere to inject everyday warmth. During several film exposures, limited illumination and slow shutter speeds required holding stances still for seconds, making time feel as though it slowed down.
I adored the wardrobe details: gold frog buttons across the dark collar were exquisite, and the satin sleeves cast a gorgeous sheen under illumination. The cobalt blue lining contrasted sharply against the dark outer robe, which, paired with the white base dress, built rich textural layers. I loved the seamless blend of classical heritage and modern imagination in this coordinate. From crisp digital sharpness to analog grain, these contrasting lenses mirrored different facets of Firefly. The shoot was pure joy, and I poured my heart into portraying a gentle yet steadfast Firefly—hope you all love these photos.
