The moment I put on this gymnastics uniform, it felt like I instantly returned to my school days. This shoot features Firefly's gym class look from Honkai: Star Rail, with a white short-sleeved T-shirt with red trim paired with red athletic shorts, and a half-slid-off red zip-up jacket worn outside, looking full of athletic energy while retaining the character's agility. The blue and white feathers on the headpiece and the light blue highlights at the hair ends are the keys to recreating the character. To capture a natural flow of the hair strands, a lot of time was spent on hair styling—using styling spray to secure the feathers' positions and intentionally trimming the bangs to be lighter so they wouldn't block my gaze.
The location chosen this time was a real classroom, where the wooden floors, desks, and podium carried a strong everyday atmosphere, avoiding the monotony of a pure studio shoot. During the shoot, we tried several different camera angles: Figure 2 is a kneeling pose leaning against the desk, utilizing the edge of the desk to form a visual guide that makes the character more three-dimensional; Figure 5 shows me sitting on a chair wearing wired earphones, holding a tablet printed with a 2D design in hand. This action fits Firefly's usual temperament much better, with the earphone cord draping casually to enhance the everyday feel. In terms of lighting, side-backlighting was used to outline the contours of the hair strands, while a soft fill light was applied to the face to make the skin texture look clean and delicate. The purplish-red colored contacts were also specially selected in a moderate diameter to be vibrant yet authentic.
The material chosen for the gymnastics uniform is a quick-drying fabric with a certain amount of elasticity, making it very comfortable to move around in without restricting any actions. The stripe details on the red jacket were recreated quite well, with double-stitching applied to the piping on the cuffs and collar. During the shoot, attention was also paid to displaying the leg lines; white over-knee socks paired with black loafers made a classic sporty combination. Actually, when shooting this kind of campus-themed cosplay photography, the most core element is to have a sense of relaxation. Instead of intentionally striking exaggerated poses, simply sitting naturally by the desk or tilting your head to look at the lens fits the character setting much better. Before pressing the shutter each time, I would always adjust my breathing to relax my gaze, capturing the most comfortable moment. This time we also took some continuous dynamic shots, such as raising a hand to fix my hair or walking down the hallway carrying the jacket. Although the ones released this time are mainly static, that vivid sense of movement is something I particularly wanted to convey. As for wig maintenance, since Firefly has long straight hair, I specially straightened it again with a flat iron before going out to avoid frizz. The gradient at the hair ends was also hand-dyed; though time-consuming, the result turned out highly satisfying. All in all, this shoot for gymnastics uniform Firefly was a very pleasant attempt, and I hope everyone can feel this aesthetic collision between campus vitality and the 2D world.
