[Ryuge Kisaki cosplay] Blue Archive 5th Anniversary Dress: Dark Retro Studio Shoot

This shoot brought to life Ryuge Kisaki's 5th anniversary dress from Blue Archive. The moment the original design concept was revealed, I fell in love with it and decided to craft the outfit by hand. My tailoring skills certainly have their limits—up close, some seamlines and panel stitches show minor flaws, and the finish felt a bit unpolished, which left me nervous that the close-ups wouldn't hold up under macro camera scrutiny.

Fortunately, the hair, makeup, and set design helped salvage the vision. The long navy-blue wig was sculpted into an updo transitioning into twin pigtails. Securing the crescent-shaped metallic crest atop the crown required numerous bobby pins, accented along the edges with delicate golden butterflies. The makeup deepened the eyeshadow blending to complement azure contact lenses, aligning closely with her dignified demeanor. Given the sheer length of the pigtails, preventing tangles required constant monitoring and several mid-shoot coats of hairspray.

The dress is a halter-neck, off-the-shoulder black lace minidress accented by a vibrant cobalt-blue floral blossom at the hip. Its buoyant, tiered skirts paired seamlessly with sheer Black stockings and pointed-toe stiletto pumps. To honor this Dark Gothic style silhouette, we chose a moody vintage studio set featuring draped black and crimson velour curtains, a champagne-gold velvet chesterfield sofa, black-and-white checkerboard flooring, and scattered antique tomes and lit white candles. Every pose shift demanded extreme care to avoid knocking over open candle flames or snagging the delicate lace hem along the sofa edges.

During the session, I found myself drawn to rear-angle perspectives. The backward glance in Photo 2 captured the open-back bodice alongside the cascading lines of the long pigtails—a compositional framing I instinctively favor across many characters. The photographer invested deep thought into lighting ratios, using warm amber overhead chandeliers to contrast with cool-white keylights across my skin, wrapping the scene in nostalgic, enigmatic mystique. Testing multiple fill angles brought out the delicate lace relief and silky sheen of the Black stockings.

Seated and reclining poses formed the core narrative. Reclining across the velvet sofa with legs crossed showcased the sleek lines of the Black stockings and the volume of the skirts, with one hand resting softly on an open book to embrace the quiet stillness of the environment. Balancing my center of gravity on plush cushions while keeping stilettos suspended was physically taxing, but the resulting proofs justified the effort. The cling of black lace against skin, polished by the high heels, struck a harmonious balance between gothic opulence and aloof allure. Handcrafting garments carries its own learning curve, yet seeing this artistic concept realized made it a deeply rewarding project.
