Sharing an archive set of Rappa cosplay shot last weekend at the ANE convention (10.2 session). Xiami took full charge of the photography and post-processing this time with amazing turnaround efficiency, establishing the overall atmosphere, light, and shadow right from the on-site shooting.
For this convention photography session, we focused heavily on the character's dynamic tension. Rappa's moves inherently possess a strong sense of motion, so when posing, we intentionally used a lot of low-angle, wide-angle shots to elongate body proportions. For example, the cover photo's posture—a lunge split combined with a hand planted on the ground—required not only core stability but also facial expression management to show a composed combat stance towards the camera. The stretched leg lines in the picture, paired with the elongating effect of the over-the-knee boots cosplay styling, look extremely sharp under the wide-angle lens. Furthermore, the pose in photo 3 involving a one-handed jump kick put high demands on balance and arm support; although we took many takes, capturing that best moment was well worth it.
Regarding outfit styling, this red and black outfit color scheme works exceptionally well. The white printed crop top paired with a red short jacket creates a vivid color contrast. The midriff-baring design, enhanced by black ultra-short shorts and belt straps, highlights the character's cool and dashing vibe during dynamic action. The red horn detail on the hat serves as the finishing touch, echoing the overall red and black mecha aesthetic.
The legs and boots styling are crucial for this character look. This time I wore black over-the-knee boots with mesh-textured fabric panels on the thighs. Combined with the red trim on the boots, this setup not only flattered the leg shape from low angles but also effectively elongated the visual proportions of the lower body. The small thigh tattoo was also retained according to the character lore. In addition, the prop weapons felt very solid; the red, white, and black ring blade props paired with two long red ribbons looked amazing when swung. During the action snapshots, swinging the weapons repeatedly caused the pink gradient wig and ribbons to flutter in the air, creating a striking trajectory under the lighting beneath the high steel roof of the exhibition hall.
Since the shoot took place inside a large convention, there were cluttered photography gear, light stands, and passersby in the background. Fortunately, using a wide angle combined with low angles helped us effectively avoid the background clutter. The bright floor reflections also added a sense of space to the pictures. The makeup and styling for this shoot required a clean and crisp look without overly complex accessories, allowing me to focus more energy on executing the core action poses.
For pre-shoot prep, to keep the wig looking voluminous during movement, we styled it with an airy texture so it wouldn't flatten against the scalp even after vigorous activity. Boot fit was also crucial—since there were many large-scale movements, boots that were too loose or tight would severely affect the shoot. Fortunately, preparation was thorough: the boots provided great support, and even after a long time shooting, there were no foot rubbing issues.
Overall, this shoot was really exhilarating, capturing the character's agility and sharpness through these sets of motion capture shots. Huge thanks to Xiami for constant coordination and quick snapping on location. For a shoot requiring frequent movement and pose adjustments, working together so seamlessly was no easy feat, bringing out the original atmosphere in the final pictures.
