Putting on this long dress of alternating aqua blue and deep indigo, standing in front of the mirror, and re-examining myself under the light, that familiar yet slightly unfamiliar feeling has returned. Although a long time has passed since the last shoot of this character, whenever I flip through these photos, I am still attracted by the cool and gentle temperament she possesses. Today, I'll share with you the details of this reshoot and some authentic experiences from the cosplay process.

Let's first talk about the texture of this costume. This outfit is very particular about the use of color, with a large area of deep blue outer robe paired with an aqua blue inner lining and a white off-the-shoulder design, creating a contradictory beauty of steadiness and clarity visually. The off-the-shoulder area of the upper body and the translucent mesh patchwork on the chest, along with the pearl necklace and ruby pendant right in the center, maximize the sense of refinement in the details. The huge light pink and white flower decoration on the side of the waist, combined with the draping ribbons and tassels, did take a lot of thought to adjust its position during the final styling; tilting even slightly would make it look cumbersome and affect the overall visual balance. In addition, the golden textures on the waist and the gold trim on the cuffs also echo the overall nobility and mystery beautifully.

Next, let's talk about the prop that has a very high appearance rate. That blue-bottomed, gold-patterned pipa prop is the soul of this whole set of photos. In order to shoot the agility of raising one leg and dancing lightly with a round fan in image three, I practiced alone indoors for a long time, because standing on one leg makes the center of gravity unstable, easily causing shaky hands or slanted compositions. Raising the round fan to outline the arc of the movement, paired with the extension of the legs and the high-slit design of the long skirt, can be considered a small challenge to body coordination.

In terms of hairstyle and makeup, the long black hair is paired with an updo that has cyan highlights or hair accessories, and the styling of the bangs intentionally carries a bit of messiness and layering to fit the character's features. To recreate her cool and detached gaze, I specially chose these emerald green colored contact lenses, paired with dark eyeliner and berry-colored lip glaze. Under the soft indoor lighting, it indeed presents a cold and glamorous state without being overly aggressive. When applying this kind of makeup that emphasizes eye makeup, I intentionally dimmed the mirror light a bit to avoid excessive highlight reflection, so that the depth of the gaze in the close-up photos would look more natural.

The biggest challenge for shooting full-length photos was actually spatial limitations and mirror reflections. For full-length mirror selfies like those in images two and three, to avoid the cluttered daily life background, I had already pushed the living room sofa and coffee table slightly to the side, leaving enough space to display the full view of the entire costume. In terms of posture choice, I prefer to utilize the high slit of the long skirt to elongate the visual proportions, which, paired with the shiny black stiletto heels shown in the photo, can further visually extend the lines of the legs. Meanwhile, the deep blue long gloves wrapping up to the forearms reduce large areas of bare skin, making the exposed legs the visual focus instead. When taking this kind of full-length mirror photo, the tilt angle of the phone is also very important; a slight high-angle or low-angle shot is incorrect. You must use the phone to slightly cover the face and find that selfie angle that can showcase the completeness of the outfit without letting the phone screen take up too large a proportion of the frame.

Overall, putting on this gear again after so long makes me feel that I have a deeper understanding of the character Ruan Mei. It's no longer just about purely pursuing external recreation, but hoping to convey the character's introverted yet calm temperament through every subtle body movement and gaze. Although the process of taking photos was very hard—wearing this kind of off-the-shoulder outfit with shorts as a base layer in freezing weather indeed requires some cold resistance—looking at myself in the mirror, I feel all the effort was quite worth it.
