Today, I joined my partners @Lillian and @SchrodingerGugu to bring a Puella Magi Madoka Magica cosplay shoot to life. The shooting location was set right outside the entrance of Sisyphe Bookstore, where warm yellow lighting and vintage red-framed glass doors provide the perfect backdrop for casual, slice-of-life magical girl moments. I primarily handled the Madoka Kaname cosplay, while my partner portrayed Akemi Homura cosplay.

To complement such a story-rich environment, I brought out the Contax G2 mounted with the Planar T* 45mm F2 lens, loaded with Kodak Ektar 100 film. Ektar 100 boasts ultra-fine grain and richly saturated color reproduction, rendering reds with breathtaking fidelity. The oversized red bows on our outfits, the crimson sleeve trims, and the red ribbons in my hair appeared exceptionally vibrant under this film stock. However, operating a rangefinder camera in low-light settings is no small feat. While the G45 has a maximum aperture of f/2, focusing via the rangefinder patch up close requires utmost precision; since we both shot wide open to creamy background bokeh, I had to hold my breath steadily to avoid missed focus. The true romance of film photography lies in this unpredictability—when clicking the shutter, you never know exactly how the frame will render until the emulsion is developed, revealing that singular, delightful surprise.

Madoka Kaname's wardrobe is visually distinctive: a white puff-sleeved blouse accented with red and black lines, anchored by an oversized red bow at the collar, evoking an impression both tender and resilient. To recreate her image faithfully, I wore a pink twintail wig with blunt bangs and applied clean, dewy base makeup to accentuate youthful vivacity. Before the lens, I focused on staying relaxed, adopting gentle chin-resting and hand-folding poses to convey Madoka's innocent, warmhearted benevolence. Meanwhile, my partner's Akemi Homura wore the matching uniform paired with black braided pigtails and red-rimmed glasses, instantly radiating a quiet, introverted poise. Standing together, that destined bond flowed naturally into the frame.

Between shooting takes, we paced in front of the bookstore searching for optimal light angles and framing. Warm light spilling through the glass gently smoothed our facial contours. Ektar 100's warm color profile blended the indoor tungsten glow with our skin tones flawlessly. In our duo portrait, I stood on the left while she stood on the right; I turned slightly toward the lens as she lightly pushed up her glasses. Without exaggerated poses, simply standing shoulder-to-shoulder conveyed an unspoken tacit understanding shared only between the two.

This shoot allowed me to rediscover the tactile joy of Film photography. In the digital age, the cost per shutter release has shrunk to near zero, but film compels you to observe your environment, dial in settings, and catch emotions with deliberate care. The crisp shutter click of the Contax G2 and the razor-sharp rendering of the G45—infused with vintage film creaminess and cinematic tones—elevated the textural quality of every frame. Bringing Puella Magi Madoka Magica to life through Film photography is not merely about replicating character designs; it is a visual chronicle of light, shadow, and destined bonds.

In reality, the mall was bustling with foot traffic, and posing outside Sisyphe naturally invited curious glances. Yet the moment we slipped into character, the surrounding chatter faded away. Though the tales of magical girls are fraught with sorrow and combat, their devotion to protecting one another remains ever-endearing. Through this set of photos, we hope to preserve that pure trust and unbreakable bond.
