Looking back at the photos I took a year ago, I have to admit the urge to delete them with a single click is almost unbearable. Even though it's the same person, the same character, and even the same pink wig and red ribbon, last year's photos always had a subtle sense of awkwardness, as if wearing an outfit that didn't quite belong to me.

This photo collage documents my journey cosplaying Madoka Kaname from May 2024 to June 2025. In the May 2024 photo, although I deliberately tried to capture the character's demeanor, the overall makeup didn't quite blend together, with the lip color and eyeshadow combination looking somewhat dull under natural light. Back then, the wig wasn't trimmed naturally enough and lacked volume at the crown, making the head shape outline look flat and my face appear a bit wide. By July 2024, I switched to a twin-tail hairstyle and added white lace hair accessories; the overall softness improved slightly, but the wig's synthetic texture still looked stiff under the flashlights back then. Back then, delivering finished photos depended heavily on post-processing; before shooting, I didn't truly understand how the outfit's fabric reacted under different lights, leading to frequent color mismatch issues.

The true qualitative leap arrived with the outdoor shoot in March 2025. Natural light beneath the cherry blossom trees gave the pink wig a translucent gradient layering, no longer looking like a dead block of color. Makeup was also adjusted to a fresh style better suited for Japanese manga/anime adaptations, with glitter added to the eye makeup to make my gaze look brighter under sunlight. Next was prop execution. The bow-drawing set was shot on an outdoor rooftop; pairing the pink skirt with the gold-trimmed bow took a long time to find a state that carried tension without feeling overly tense. Drawing a bow looks simple, but details like pulling in the stomach, puffing out the chest, and relaxing shoulders are hard to execute simultaneously. The single-leg leap required great control over my center of gravity; paired with a White thigh-highs outfit style on the legs, it visually elongated leg proportions, while hand gestures had to pass precisely through the bowstring to avoid breaking character.

As for the photo waving the red ribbon, it was a dynamic candid snapshot captured at an anime convention. Venue lighting was complex with scattered setups and passersby around; compared to studio shoots or pre-planned static poses, that candid smile actually suited the character's signature energetic charm much better. These Convention photos made me realize that immersing oneself in the present emotion is sometimes far more important than forcing a pose. From initial stiff posing to today's natural freedom, portraying Madoka Kaname has accompanied me through a crucial period. It's not just progress in makeup, wigs, and post-processing, but a transformation in mindset. I used to feel awkward looking at the camera screen, but now I'm fully invested. Often, unsatisfactory photos aren't due to inadequate equipment or makeup techniques, but rather not fully trusting the styling and props. Facing the lens now, I know much more clearly what form I want to present.

Looking now at those old photos dubbed as "dark history," it's easy to self-deprecate or want to delete them when no one is looking, but this is undoubtedly a necessary process of growth. Without challenging oneself time and again, one can never realize where shortcomings lie. For instance, in the first few shoots, I didn't know the grip angle of the bow would obscure finger lines; now I won't make the same mistake. Refining every detail through Cosplay photography is the greatest reward cosplay has given me. Treat every shoot earnestly, and the photos will naturally reward you.
