For this night location shoot, we chose a city overpass escalator as the main location. The scene features a highly striking blue LED strip light source, and these cool light sources create a very interesting color contrast during the actual shoot. Before shooting, I observed the surroundings; the empty night streets and the distant shop lights provided rich background layers for the frames.
To match the character's setting, the overall styling used a long, straight black wig with blunt bangs, light purple contact lenses, and a pale base makeup. A lot of time was spent smoothing out the wig strands before going out, especially the blunt bangs, which required precise trimming to cover the upper eyebrows while revealing the eyes. The choice of contact lenses fit the natural eye contours well, making them suitable for an extended continuous shoot.
For the eye makeup, purplish-red eyeshadow was used for blending, focusing on enhancing the depth of the eye sockets to match the character's visual expression of calm blended with a touch of melancholy and focus. The lip color chosen was a natural pale red, adding a subtle touch of warmth to echo the cool, pale base of the face.
Regarding the costume, this uniform has many layers around the collar, especially the long purple ribbon on the chest, which needed constant adjustment during the shoot to avoid messy creases when moving or turning around. The white coat spliced with dark gray and black cuffs creates a great visual contrast. The skirt features a dark pleated design with good stability, making it less likely to flutter excessively due to wind or large movements.
This shoot experimented with a high-angle overhead shot. The first frontal photo effectively showcases the front costume details and facial expressions. During the shoot, facial expressions needed to be restrained; while keeping the eyes focused, a hand gently touching the collar was incorporated to soften the stiffness of the overall posture. The overhead angle requires mastering the tilt of the head to make the jawline appear sharper.
The second close-up side profile looking back focuses on showcasing the shoulder and neck lines, as well as the tailoring of the costume's side. This kind of cool-toned night scene is actually a challenge for capturing skin tones, as the ambient blue light can easily suppress the natural skin color. The shoot relied heavily on the ambient glow from streetlights and the escalator's own blue light ring to outline the silhouette, blending the character into this highly urban environment. A large amount of cool light intertwined with the warm shop lights occasionally scattered in the background.
Although the outfit is tedious to wear and the wig is easily affected by the wind or movements, during the actual location shoot, through communication with the photographer regarding angles and lighting, we captured moments that both of us were relatively satisfied with. Standing on an escalator, the stability of the posture is crucial; one must maintain bodily balance while finding ways to keep the limbs relaxed and extended.
Not many major changes were made in post-processing; the original blue-violet ambient light was preserved, with only minor adjustments to the transitions of facial light and shadow, giving the overall image a serene and uniquely styled night portrait quality. This low-saturation, high-cool-toned anime-style photography style fits the character's intrinsic traits quite well.
