The Convention photos from Guangzhou CP05 have finally been sorted out. This time I cosplayed Madoka Kaname from Puella Magi Madoka Magica, while my partner portrayed Sayaka Miki.
The details of this pink dress are actually far more intricate than imagined. The red piping along the skirt hem and the massive pink bow at the waist required preliminary ironing and shaping; to maintain a fluffy volume at the convention, I wore two layers of petticoats beneath. The pink twin-tail wig took a long time to trim, and the bows on both sides of the crown were secured with hairspray and bobby pins to prevent deformation while walking around the hall. The red strappy high heels paired with white lace over-the-knee White stockings look remarkably authentic visually, but walking the exhibition hall truly tests foot endurance, and the stockings tend to slip down during movement, requiring constant adjustments whenever an opportunity arose. My partner's light-blue short hair and white cape looked exceptionally sharp, and her large sword prop was constructed from a wooden structure combined with sanded EVA foam, boasting a fantastic texture after painting and a solid weight in hand.
While shooting inside the venue, the photographer Mo Qiufeng excelled at utilizing the terrain. We chose spots near railings and pillars, where the gray reflective ground combined with cool-toned overhead lighting created a striking warm-and-cool contrast against Madoka's pink and Sayaka's blue. Duo pose coordination required repetitive adjustments. For the second full-body shot, we adopted a standing-and-sitting combination, with my partner sitting on the ground showcasing white stockings and boots, while I stood beside her holding the wooden bow with one hand. Because both of our skirts were quite voluminous, coupled with the considerable length of the bow and sword, our props frequently bumped into each other while posing, taking several attempts to find angles that avoided breaking the illusion. Pulling the bowstring actually takes a bit of strength; to keep my facial expression natural before the lens, I only let the photographer press the shutter after regulating my breathing.
Convention photography differs from studio sessions as it demands continuous adaptation to on-site lighting and foot traffic. Surrounded by tourists and photographers in all sorts of attire, we diligently sought clean background angles to bypass crowds. Some sessions featured harsh lighting, necessitating facial fill lighting. The pink-and-white apparel risked looking washed out against light backgrounds, so post-processing increased contrast and saturation while preserving the raw shots' translucent feel. The pairing of White stockings and red high heels rendered exceptionally crisp lines in the photos, which was precisely a core focus of our preliminary coordination. The entire shooting process was fast-paced, filled with moments of unspoken chemistry with my partner. Bringing flat 2D characters into a three-dimensional reality demands relentless attention to costume details and body postures. The outfits from Puella Magi Madoka Magica might seem casual at first glance, but actually executing them involves substantial maintenance work for props and wigs, making the resulting captures deeply rewarding.
