Today's shoot was staged in an industrial venue fitted with massive exhaust fans and ventilation ducts. Artificial rocks were arranged across the set, with continuous smoke pumped into the space. We aimed to capture an austere, somber atmosphere amidst the ruins. To resonate with the paradoxical conflict of the endless spiral of life and death, we prepared contrasting styles: a white bridal gown concept versus a black Gothic style ensemble. Both outfits were exceedingly rich in detail—the white attire featured intricate lace, ruffles, and a veil, light and airy yet prone to snagging on jagged rocks; the black outfit embraced a form-fitting cutout silhouette paired with lace garter straps and black stockings, clinging tightly to bodily curves. The hilts of both prop longswords were adorned with metallic carved filigree; while they looked exceptionally sleek, holding them aloft for extended takes left our wrists deeply aching.
During shooting, to accentuate leg contours, the photographer made extensive use of low-angle upward perspectives. The Black and white stockings and high heels commanded significant visual presence in the frame; paired with the cool-blue key light and side spotlights on set, the visual tension was striking. To evoke that feeling of being stranded in ruins and swept along by fate, our pose choreography explored diverse interactions. Sometimes we nestled together seated on the boulders, other times we faced off blade-to-blade, or even dropped to one knee and balanced atop uneven stones. Keeping balance on rugged rock in high heels was genuinely grueling physical labor—maintaining taut muscle tone to display graceful lines required continuous core engagement, leaving our backs and bodies sore after the session.
Light and shadow served as the true soul of this set. Beyond base illumination, we paired rim backlighting with the smoke machine to produce a pronounced Tyndall effect. Light beams sliced through the mist onto the garment fabrics, bringing their tactile textures vividly to life. In one composition framed beneath the exhaust fan, a shaft of light fell directly between the black and white twin figures, forming a sharp chiaroscuro contrast. I continuously coordinated with the photographer to rein in blown-out highlights while preserving shadow details in the dark fabrics. Such stark contrast allowed the characters to pop crisply against the cluttered industrial backdrop, effortlessly accentuating bodily curves and the allure of the Black and white stockings.
Framing a duo shot is a profound test of tacit synergy. We needed synchronization not only in our physical poses, but also in eye-line focal points and breathing rhythms. Surrounded by cold concrete and bare metal, we had to embody both the characters' resolute resilience and a fragile, tragic contradiction. To seize the perfect fleeting instant, we repeatedly readjusted our footing on the jagged rocks, overcoming unsteady footholds and the smoke stinging our breathing. Though physically exhausting, reviewing those atmospheric, light-interwoven moments on the monitor washed all fatigue away. This creative journey of breaking through artistic boundaries within Ruins photography is something deeply exhilarating and addicting (NieR:Automata cosplay).
