[Yani Neko cosplay] Mint Green Catgirl: Languid and Decadent Visual Records

Today, I'm sharing the behind-the-scenes thoughts and styling concept for this Yani Neko shoot.

The creative concept behind this set centers on stark visual contrast. To faithfully embody Yani Neko, I selected a muted, grayish mint-green wig styled with straight bangs and textured layers, topped with a pair of plush cat ears featuring a pink, white, and black gradient. For the makeup, aiming for that flushed, slightly tipsy, and decadent vibe, I blended reddish-brown and pink eyeshadow generously across the lower lash line, sharpening the eyeliner winged outwards, and finished with dark contact lenses. A bold red manicure added subtle character detail.

For the wardrobe, I opted for minimalism: an oversized light-green short-sleeved tee paired with dark navy-black drawstring lounge pants, with a grayish-green plush tail hooked onto the waistband. This laid-back, loungewear aesthetic set up an engaging visual collision with the exaggerated props.

Props were the indisputable centerpiece of this production. The massive white cylinder was entirely handcrafted: I painted the exterior with a white base, added blue circular stripes, and dry-brushed the tip with black and gray pigments to simulate a charred, carbonized burn effect, reinforcing the interior with a lightweight structural armature so it held shape comfortably. Balancing this behemoth across my shoulder while perched on a silver metallic folding chair in chunky beige platform slides fostered an absurd, nonchalant atmosphere. As for the cigarette prop pieces clenched in my mouth, we prepared an abundant supply. Gripping multiple props between my teeth simultaneously was surprisingly challenging—I had to carefully control bite pressure without soaking the paper tips, necessitating frequent replacements between takes.

The entire shoot was staged against a seamless white studio cyclorama under bright, diffused soft light, with light-gray vinyl flooring laid down to cleanly separate the subject from the white background. For posing, I stayed as loose as possible: resting one foot atop the giant cigarette prop, slumping lazily in the folding chair with a cigarette prop loosely held between my fingers, or reaching outward to play with wide-angle perspective. Fusing everyday casual wear with oversized props and decadent grunge makeup shattered conventional portraiture logic, forging a distinct subculture photography visual tension.

Throughout the session, the emotional tone leaned heavily toward unhurried languor; rather than forcing rigid, dynamic poses, an indifferent, careless state resonated best with today's theme. Slipping barefoot into the slides or propping feet onto props gave the composition breathing room. Documenting these moments through the lens was a blast, and I hope you all enjoy this surreal subculture photography take.
