[Dorothy cosplay] Wearing a White Cheongsam: Fulfilling Doro's Cheongsam Dream

Shooting this white cheongsam set was actually a creative project I planned well before cosplaying the character. I was completely captivated the moment I saw Dorothy's cheongsam look in Goddess of Victory: Nikke—the striking contrast between vibrant pink hair and pure white lace is impossible not to love. To be candid, once the physical outfit arrived (the costume from "Zhuazhua's shop" mentioned in the post), the tailoring and fabric details truly left much to be desired. In particular, the collar construction and waist support required a lot of time with safety pins and double-sided tape to achieve the ideal tailored fit.

For the wig, I specifically chose a slightly desaturated bright pink so that, together with the top bow and hair accessories, the overall look wouldn't appear overly glaring. In reality, maintaining airy volume and fluffiness in long hairstyles during shooting is quite a challenge. Achieving that breezy, flowing state shown in the photos essentially required on-site wind machines or manual tossing for candid captures. Beyond the standard base wig, I individually attached several gently curled hair extensions to increase total volume, preventing the hair from appearing sparse under strong backlighting.

While the costume design is ethereal and fairy-like, the extensive sheer tulle splicing, delicate lace, ruffles, and high side slit significantly restricted daily movement and posing. Actions like holding an umbrella or sitting down were prone to accidental exposure or snagging the tulle. Nonetheless, the fusion of this modified cheongsam is ingenious: it preserves the traditional mandarin collar and slits while integrating Western-style spaghetti straps, mesh, and waist cutouts. It seamlessly matches the character's aesthetic and flatters body proportions. Paired with specially prepared White stockings and high heels (white floral heels), the visual outcome perfectly achieved the romantic and dreamy fusion I envisioned for this Cheongsam cosplay.

We split the shoot across two distinctive settings. The first was a classical Chinese tea room adorned with lattice windows, calligraphy scrolls, wooden shelving, plum blossoms, and bamboo leaves—ideally complementing the traditional elements of the cheongsam. Warm yellow lighting cast across the wig and tulle surfaces created the cozy ambiance of a sunset twilight. The second was a dreamy pink studio featuring a shell-shaped lounge sofa and a plush pink rug, yielding a softer, sweeter finish that, when paired with a white round fan or lace umbrella, harmonized with the character's intrinsic elegance.

Photo 2, featuring a seated pose with the Chinese round fan, is my personal favorite for natural body language. Gazing straight into the camera lens, it showcases the premier highlights of the outfit while keeping the details of the white stockings and delicate ankle chain crisply defined. The photographer's fill lighting was fantastic, gently lifting shadow areas in a compact indoor space without blowing out highlights.

Despite the hurdles posed by the costume and props, the final imagery turned out deeply satisfying. Cosplay is fundamentally a journey of overcoming real-world obstacles to align with character lore. With dedicated styling, thoughtful composition, and great teamwork with the photographer, minor garment flaws can be smoothly overcome through lighting and angles.
